Sears...Really?

When I went to search for “dorm” and “refrigerator” on the Sears site, there were three hits. The third was a kegerator “skin”. I am not naive, and I know that kids drink in college, but to have this one of the three choices strikes me as Sears promoting underage drinking. Anyone else find this off putting?

We got ours at Costco.

If I search “dorm refrigerator” on Google I get several hits that are labelled “mini refrgeratir” on the sites (Home Depot, etc). Lots of people may search for dorm fridge when they want any type of small refrigerator type appliances. They’re goi g to tag things for searching with terms they think people commonly use.

Costco has kegerators?

But seriously, unless money is not a concern, I’d check on craigslist for a dorm fridge. Best are the ones with a separate door for the freezer compartment.

Make sure you know what your college allows before you buy anything.

If it’s off putting, shop somewhere else. There are plenty of places that offer a larger selection of dorm refrigerators. Based on how search functions generally work, the kegerator skin fits kegerators and dorm refrigerators so the search picked up those keywords/tags.

Do I think Sears is promoting underage drinking? No. I consider that conclusion a bit of a reach.

At a 4 year college, roughly half of the students will be legal because they will be either 21 or 22 or higher.

^^ How do you figure that? As a general rule, only the seniors would be 21 or 22 or higher. Seniors don’t make up half of the students at a 4-year college?

I was at an adult BBQ last weekend and the male half of the couple was showing off his new microbrew kegerator which seemed to be part of a dorm sized fridge set up with a nice pull on top. “Dorm” or “personal” or “minibar” are interchangeable in this case and denote only the size of the fridge and not the intended audience.

All of mine turned 21 during their junior year of college. Only at a small college would I expect most of the campus to be less than 21. Unis with grad schools etc would probably have most students 21 or older. I would not think anything about a search for mini-fridge turning up a keg fridge - they are about the same size.

@patsmom Most go from 18-19 during freshman year, then 19-20 in sophomore year, then 20-21 and juniors (legal drinking age) and 21+ in senior year and beyond.

Yes, I realized that after I posted but it was too late to edit. I was thinking about my own kids, who turned 21 in their senior years, so it sounded off to me at first reading.

I think you’re reading too much into this…

I think you’re right. @-)

Sears allows anyone to buy listings on their web site. It’s mostly junk now. If I really think they might have something I want, I check the box that says “Sears Only” at the top of the search page.

Look at Walmart or target for dorm fridges

I meant to say that Sears allows anyone to SELL things on their web site. Half of it isn’t even things being sold by Sears. They charge vendors to list on their site.

Most searches will turn up items related to only one of the search words-people with in-home bars sometimes have Kegerators and they are roughly the size of dorm fridges. It makes perfect sense. I’d bet a search for a BBQ lighter might also turn up lighters used for smoking, or a search for glasses, those used to drink liquor. It’s a big world.
