Sears--Where It Begins Is Acquiring BAD Meanings

I really like the Bosch we have. Lots of places sell them so if that’s what you want just see if you can get it elsewhere.

I have to admit I’m taken aback by all the negative Sears comments. Not that I have any reason to doubt anyone’s experience but I will say I’ve bought many appliances from them - as recently as in the last 2 years. Bought a gas grill there last week. Never had an issue with a purchase or a service call but I suppose customer service can be vary quite a bit by locale.

I did buy a washer and dryer set from our local mom and pop shop a few years back and when it was delivered there was a big dent on the side of the dryer. When I pointed it out to the delivery person, he told me I would have to call the service people and have them come out and deal with it. I was quite irritated by this extra step, necessitating more time off work, more phone calls, etc. Something they could have easily caught if they had inspected the dryer before delivery.

HiMOM- they are on my list of companies to boycott. Nobody (and I mean nobody) has worse customer service then Sears. I’m sorry you are finding this out the hard way.

I bought a washer from them 3 years ago… it had a free refund on delivery… they brought it, hooked it up wrong, and left… I thought my pipes were going to burst, my whole house was shaking… my dad had to come fix it… then they didn’t refund the money for my delivery… stating i never purchased anything from them! fast forward a year and it broke… my credit card covered the repair fees as it was 1 month out of warranty… but when the credit card tried to verify the purchase with sears they had no record of it… the amount on my card and the amount on my receipt were not the same… it took me weeks to get that straightened out… i called sears three or four times till someone actually was able to track down my purchase… i wound up having to fax them my receipt and then they corrected it and e-mailed me a corrected receipt back… which i then forwarded to the credit card company and had a check in my hand like four days later… ugh!

Sears is useful for stuff that you buy that absolutely will not require any service or repairs and that you can inspect for defects at the store.

In this vein, I’ve bought clothes, a tire inflation machine, and weight plates in the last few years at Sears.

Well, the problems we had were related to incorrect information as to what our local store had in stock (stated two of the appliances, when it was zero and they informed us that they had long discontinued carrying the item). When we returned the appliance that was not working properly, they ordered one through their website, and then we got an email that they also no longer carry this item. Then rather than crediting DH’s credit card they decided to send a store gift card instead to refund his money. We have a problem with that!

I’ve bought numerous appliances and other things from Sears over the years, and have never had a problem.

I’ve bought numerous appliances from HD, Lowes, and Best Buy over the years, never really had any problems with them, either.

Just lucky I guess.

I feel like I’m living in a parallel universe. We bought a Kenmore washer and dryer a few years ago and purchased the extended warranty. We have called Sears for minor issues with the washer or dryer a few times - the last being a month or so ago. A service technician has come within a day or two at most, taken care of the problem, and gone on his merry way. The technicians have been prompt, courteous … and knowledgeable. We bought a Bosch dishwasher at Sears last Saturday (as I said in an earlier post). Sears handled delivery (free) and installation. Sears also made sure we had the needed paperwork to send in to Bosch to cover installation costs - a special offer that we might have missed. I admit we bought the Bosch dishwasher from Sears mainly because we have been so impressed with its service department in regards to our washer and dryer. We suffered through problem after problem with a Maytag washer and dryer, replaced them with the Kenmore … and have been so impressed (repeating myself here :)) with our overall experience with Sears.

We must be living in parallel universes. I was at the mall today and CONFIRMED with the salesclerk that they DO have in stock the EXACT machine that their corporate office lied to me that they NO LONGER HAVE or carry AT ALL! The salesclerk seemed very puzzled, since he hasn’t been a part of this crazy saga. Oh well, it was enough to convince me that I’m not buying anything of value there again. I really HAD liked Sears for the most part prior to this sequence of events, where they have made multiple misrepresentations.

HImom, could it be that one of them was just mistaken? It seems to me that their website needs to really improve the way that they report their stock to both sales people and customers!

The way I see it is that no one is accountable.

I have purchased Sears appliances but I have ceased using their repair services. I’ve not needed repair during the warranty period and I’ve never had a problem with the store or on-line ordering. We have washers, dryers and dishwashers that came from Sears. The last came when I called for a repair…told them exactly what part needed to be replaced. They charged me $50 for a service call, they arrived a week later and came without the part. Told me what I already knew (that I needed the part I already told them I needed) and said they would need to order a part and they would be back in a week…then Sears tried to charge me another $50 for them to come back and install the part. I was not happy, told them to forget it, called a local guy, told him what part I needed and he showed up 2 days later with the part and fixed the washing machine and now I go “local” for my repairs. The local people come faster and they listen to you when you make the service call.

I do buy tires at the local Sears auto repair. At least at ours, they don’t try to add on or oversell. You walk in, tell them what tires you want and an hour later you are on your way. But home appliance repair and Sears…never again.

I got the email from corporate & confirmed by a corporate guy when we spoke on the phone. They had a black & stainless model of the dishwasher I wanted on the floor & his quick computer check showed they had the white one IN STOCK. Corporate said BOSCH HAD NO MORE OF THESE DISHWASHERS AND WAS NOT MAKING THEM AVAILABLE TO SEARS. Seems like a pretty baldfaced lie; they never offered either of the floor models or anything else, just unilaterally canceled my order.

We’ll probably take the lowest priced ad into somewhere & get a Whirlpool from someone who hopefully won’t play head games or other games with us. This has taken up WAY too much time & energy!

Did send an email to the guy at corporate who has been talking with & emailing me. Will see what (if any) response I get from him/them, but get the feeling me & my extended family will not be spending money at Sears for the foreseeable future, which is too bad since it was a store we had liked–until now.

^^ It really is a shame. For decades, it’s been axiomatic in my family that for moderately-priced, extremely reliable large applicances, you need look no farther than Sears and Kenmore. But yeah, we’ve had nothing but trouble with our latest Kenmore fridge, and the LG dishwasher we bought at Sears never has worked properly despite 3 service calls. OTOH, the Whirlpool oven that we got at Home Depot has been trouble-free.

Another one of life’s certainties gone by the boards. :(

Around here, I stopped shopping at Sears a number of years ago, when they no longer offered free delivery and take away of the old useless junk that I had bought from them only a few years before. It was GE not kenmore, but junk nevertheless. The initial purchase had good sales, delivery etc, and a few years later, poor sales staff, more expensive re delivery etc.

After that I went to PC Richard, which is a chain, but not a national one as I understand it. This was a NY company that expanded to NJ, and I think connecticut. I thought I got good prices on the appliances that I have bought, and the installation and delivery were fine too. I did have a defective tv set (it had a built in dvd, which stopped working), and since it was under warranty I took it to them. They could not fix it, but I got full credit for the tv. Here my only complaint was that it took too long to find out that it could not be fixed (quite a few weeks), but I think parts were not available or something like that, so I can’t blame them too much. For those in their coverage area (sorry not Hawaii), I think worth checking out.

I do not recommend Best Buy and its Geek Squad. Although they eventually made our order correct and got the installation right, it took numerous phone calls and service calls to get it right, and really only one person at the store was willing to help us. If she had not been helpful, it would have really been ugly. This was for a tv and audio system.

It is really sad to me that so few places in our state even deal with appliances any more & those that do have so little authority to make things right by the customer. Lots of the equipment is NOT made well and needs to be replaced a LOT sooner than “the old days.” Our original frigde lasted over 10 years. The 2nd fridge just lasted 5 or so years. Am hoping we are lucky on this latest one, which we have had for nearly a year now, but who knows.

May try using the small company here who helps obtain whatever you want–you tell them the brand & model # & approximate price. They will try to obtain it for you at that price & can get the item delivered & old items hauled away; installation is also negotiable. Have bought some things from them before & had no issues working with them.

Until this dishwasher debacle, never had so much trouble with Sears before. We have purchased a chipper/shredder, lawnmower, and other equipment from them.

But, come to think of it, their auto repair folks DID recommend a LOT of servicing that my mechanics vetoed as not needed–that’s why there was that class action lawsuit! I just got oil & lube, as well as tires & batteries & Sears & kept their recommendations to check out with independent mechanics. NEVER had any that the mechanics agreed should be done.

I wish someone would explain to my 20 1/2 year old Kenmore refrigerator that it’s not suppose to last this long! I desperately want to replace it with something more modern but the darn thing has never once given us trouble. Am thinking about ‘accidentally’ cutting a wire. They sure don’t make them like they use to. We had a Kenmore washer and dryer set that was 25 years old. When we sold our last house the buyers asked to keep them (thank goodness!).

Our Maytag Washer/Dryer has been going strong for the past 23 years. We did have 2 service calls, both related to the rat the tenant let into the house WITHOUT telling us about it. The rat ate through some of the hosing, which caused bleach to drip onto the motor or something. Had to have that fixed. Later, the motor gave it up from the assault from the bleach & had to be replaced. It’s been doing just fine ever since.

I hope both keep working forever–that would make us very happy. They both look like new and function fine. Wish our fridges lasted forever–no such luck here.

Here is a warning about buying wall to wall carpet . Be sure to be home when it is installed ! My mom ,in her eighties almost had a fast one pulled . They installed new carpeting over existing padding ! My mom wondered why there was a rolling of padding in her garage . The installers said it was for another job . She called the store after the carpet guys left . The manager came over and checked - sure enough ,the old padding was still there ! She had the job redone at no charge and the installer went to jail !

Yea, I was charged for removing the existing flooring & installing new sheet vinyl. I peeked under the sheet vinyl & saw the old existing flooring and complained. The apologized & refunded me the amount they said was allocated for the removal. Didn’t take them to court but will NEVER use them or recommend them again–they were friends of family–yuck!

We have always bought appliances from Sears and had good luck with Kenmore.

THAT SAID… we bought a new refrigerator last summer from Sears. It’s a Kenmore, as was our last one that was 17 years old. I mentioned that I like Kenmore and that Kenmore products are actually made by Whirlpool. The saleswoman corrected me - they USED to be made by Whirlpool. They are now made by a company in Korea or maybe Mexico (I can’t remember), and she said we could probably expect to get 10 years at most out of this fridge before needing a new one. We bought it anyway because it was the only one we found between Sears, HD and Loews that had the features we wanted in the size we wanted (all the ones at HD and Loews that had the features we wanted were too big to fit in the opening in our kitchen).

Also had some trouble a few years back with a Kenmore front-loading washing machine that was still under warrantee. Had a lot of trouble with Sears customer service on the phone and the first guy who came had no idea what he was doing. But he called and had a second guy come, who fixed it. A minimal charge as it was still under warrantee. However he warned me that this model is repair prone and probably wouldn’t last very long. That was probably 10 years ago and I haven’t had a day’s trouble with the machine since (KNOCKING ON WOOD).
