Seaside Park NJ

The boardwalk is on fire and it is spreading quickly.

I just saw that. How scary! And it was mentioned how it had survived Sandy.

Just saw video on CNN. Governor Christie is on his way to Seaside Park now. Hopefully the only casualties will be buildings and not lives. CNN is going to have an update again soon.

Seaside charred. So sad to see. And, Boulder, Colorado more epic rain and floods. NJ could use some, of that now . Just some.

My sister works about 20 minutes up the beach from there and said she could smell the fire from there. I believe everything is wood there, so a fire could devastate the area quickly. I believe it started in an ice cream shop.

NJ.com says a witness says it started near the shop on the boardwalk spread to the Kohr’s custard stand. It looked like it was contained but all of a sudden another business went up in flames and it was out of control since.

I have heard the hydrants are not working.

Started in the Kohrs ice cream shop.

DH and I are are watching with sadness.
I grew up in monmouth county and spent many summers at seaside.
We live in nothern nj now.

So sad for those business owners many of whom just finished rebuilding after Sandy.
Thankfully, no fatalities i think.

Just plain sickening for those poor folks.

Local paper is reporting the fire is under control.

Heartbreaking. LIke musicmom, I grew up nearby on the Jersey shore, and it just kills me to see this happen, after everything it’s gone through.

So sad. These are small businesses, many of which have still not sorted out their insurance claims from Sandy. It is NOT crazy Seaside of MTV fame, but the calmer town to the south.

Our NJ shore town suffered devastating fires in 2010 & 2011 with 6 & 8 houses destroyed, respectively. We almost lost ours in the 2011 fire. Same story - 25+ mph winds fanning the flames, wooden structures and buildings on top of each other.

One guy interviewed on CNN said he was under the impression that there was some firefighter’s convention going on somewhere in south Jersey and some of the Seaside Park crew were down there, and had taken some of their new equipment to show off (as part of the convention). He said some people were now questioning whether it spread so fast because there weren’t enough crews close enough to get in under control while it was still somewhat smallish. If this is the case, I’m sure the full story will come out in the press… and it will not be pretty. I really hope it’s not so.

So sad. A friend’s mother JUST moved back into her house in that area, and my friend was up there last week. Sooooo sad. These poor people. So hard to recover from another tragic loss. Sympathies.

The wind was over 30mph from the south at the shore today, which just fanned the flames north into the adjacent buildings. It was near 90 yesterday & today. Until this evening, we haven’t had significant rain in several weeks.

It’s a small town. The local news said much of the fire dept is volunteer, which is still common in some NJ towns.
