Any other sufferers out there? I feel like this year has been the worst yet. I don’t know what it is. I’m finding it almost impossible to be outside. I had to spend a lot of time outside on Saturday and I’m still feeling miserable about it two days later. My grass needs to be mowed and I’m seriously considering hiring someone to take care of it because I just can’t be outside right now.

I just invested in a new air purifier for my bedroom and this is the one room in my house where I’ve been able to find relief. I’m thinking of buying another one for my living room as well.

I just checked out the PollenCast for my area on weather.com and every single day during May has been the darkest red possible.

I used to get horrible hay fever every spring. None of the medicines worked very well and many of them made me very sleepy. But it magically cleared up when I moved to southern California. It still comes right back in a day or two when I travel to other parts of the country in springtime. So whatever I’m allergic to apparently doesn’t grow around here. Which is one major reason why I’ve never wanted to move away from SoCal.

coureur,

are you in the blank area? if so, it sounds like you made a smart choice! I’m thinking about taking a trip to the beach for a weekend just to clear my head with some fresh ocean air. But I’m worried there will be allergens there as well and I’ll be walking into a trap!!

I was just reading articles that they think this year is the worst yet in the north east due to hurricane sandy shaking things up.

I have had allergies since I was a kid. There was a great OTC medication that I took that was perfect until they yanked it from the market. It was the perfect blend of just the right dosage and no side-effects. I’m pretty sure that it was yanked as people stole it from drug stores to make illegal drugs from it.

So I just mostly suffer with it. Pollen Cast is nice to have.

My office has very good filtration and I’m pretty comfortable there. My car has a HEPA air filter but it isn’t as good as the office. We have Hunter HEPA filters at home though I don’t use them that much. It takes about 30 minutes to clean out a room if I want to use them.

My allergies come and go. I am allergic to some tree, weed and grass pollen. Some weeks I’m fine even though there’s lots of pollen around and some weeks it is awful. It’s just one of life’s pains. You can go the route to get rid of allergies or you can go the medication route or you can just live with it. Moving to an area that doesn’t have so much may be an option too.

Fendergirl, if you have forced air heat in hour house, consider installing an electronic air filter for your furnace.

[Hepa Honeywell | Furnace Filters | Indoor Air Quality | Honeywell filters | Electronic Air Cleaner | Home Air Cleaners](http://yourhome.honeywell.com/home/Products/Air+Cleaning/)

Bunsen, I actually have steam heat for my house. I also have a heat pump/AC unit… which needs to be serviced. I haven’t used it yet this year.

Mine came and went in the past but this year they are just here to stay. They started showing up already at the end of February. It’s just so irritating. Until I got this new air purifier i was waking up looking like I was crying all night with my eyes watering out of my head each morning and a sore throat from the crap draining down my throat. What a mess.

The fact that I have a relatively large yard and some very big trees does not exactly help!

I put my old air purifier in my office. Both are True HEPA.

I’m pretty much allergic to the world… pollen, grass, dust, smoke, dogs, cats, scents (the perfume section of stores does me in EVERY time. I wish they would stop putting it right smack dab in front of the entrance)… etc

I usually take zyrtec - just picked up a ton of packs of the generic version at walmart for 88 cents each.

I feel for you. I never suffered from allergies i my life (and was very unsympathetic to the hay fever sufferers I knew, thinking “it can’t be that bad”). Then I moved to Oklahoma in my 30s and immediately developed severe seasonal allergies. Not fun at all.

Ironically enough, my horrendous fall seasonal allergies vanished when I moved to DC. I also haven’t suffered from springtime allergies, so whatever pollen it was (I suspect ragweed) must not be prevalent in this area

Yes, I live in San Diego. And it was more of a lucky choice than a smart one. I moved here for other reasons and the lack of hay fever turned out to be an unexpected bonus.

I have finally stopped feeling miserable. What it took:

Dust mite covers on my bed and pillows. Air purifier in bedroom. New hvac system with the state of the art air filters.

Allegra and Cingulair and nasalcort spray when in major distress. I also just had a turbinate coblation - surgery on those tubes in my nose.

I think the bedroom is the most important room to address since it’s where you spend the most time. I never have windows open in my house. I have mostly hardwood floors.

Truly the dust mite covers and air filter helped me the most. Also be sure to wash your sheets in hot water once a week.

I don’t mow my lawn or do any outside yard work.

I’m also getting ready to redo an allergy test. I’m allergic to dust, mold, oak trees, some grass.

Last year I had a horrible, horrible time with my allergies. Worse I have ever experienced. One of my Eustachian tubes swells up and I end up with lots of fluid in that ear. I then can’t hear anything except ringing in the ear. I also get eye symptoms and last year ended up with a nasty eye infection/inflammation. Had to do two rounds of Prednisone to clear up my ears.

Consequently, I’ve worked really hard this year to keep my symptoms at bay. It seems to be working.

I use Flonase (corticosteroid nasal spray), Allegra and moisture eye drops daily.

I add Sudafed (the original formula) and Mucinex when I start to feel my ear clogging up. It also helps to flush my nose/sinuses with a saline nasal spray. I like Ocean’s Sinus Rinse: [Sinus Rinse - Ocean Nasal Care](<a href=“Home | Bausch Health”>Home | Bausch Health)

I spent hours and hours researching the allergy issue last spring and stumbled across a great website.

Here’s the website:
[Allergy Medications Explained](http://www.fauquierent.net/allergymeds.htm)

This doctor recommends also NasalCrom. I had never heard of it before. It really does seem to help. I get it at Walgreens.

I also check the daily pollen count in our area and try to avoid being outside when it’s high. Something has been high for at least the last 6 weeks - right now it’s trees and weeds.

Had taken Zrytec year-round since it was released in the 90s and it cleared up chronic bronchitis. Starting in January, I had a constant sinus infection and was completely miserable in late March as soon as pollen started. Finally went to allergist for testing was was told I was allergic to ‘everything and the outdoors’. He switched me to the next generation of Zrytec, Xyzal - still a prescription, and a heavy duty nasal spray. (Flonase and Nasonex are often prescribed, but they did nothing for me - both are prescription).

Within days my sinuses were clear. My eyes still itch, so it’s Zatador drops before bed and when I get up (need to wait 10 minutes before putting in contact after the drops).

I developed asthma as an adult, after a bad bout of bronchitis. It would only be a problem when I had a cold or allergies, and what works for me is Singulair. I take it every day year-round, and have had great results. I rarely get a cold any more, so I suspect most of my previous ‘colds’ were allergies. I rarely need to use albuterol now also. Sometimes in the spring I still get a little nighttime nasal drainage, and use the generic form of Actifed for that.

I use it morning and again at night when the pollen count is high and I spend the day outdoors.

Also, if you are outside a lot during the day, wash your hair before you go to bed. That way your face isn’t in a pollen covered pillow all night.

I also have to resort to nasal steroids and loratadine when it gets bad and this spring is the worst I remember.

I have a neti-med bottle. I did not find it helped much with pollen.

Another suggestion is to change your pillow case every night.
