I realize most of you might not be up and on the computer yet, but maybe someone can help. My sister in law is in Settle today and will be leaving on an Alaskan cruise tomorrow morning. She called this morning not feeling well and might have some leg swelling. My husband the doctor, want her to go get seen in the ER before getting on a boat for a week.

We are looking for the best hospital ER, not the public hospital anyone off the street can go to. Is there a private hospital with an open ER? She is downtown near the convention center, but they do not mind driving to get to the hospital. I do not mean to criticize the public hospital, but if it is like ours, it is flooded with drunks and uninsured people. My SIL has great insurance. She wants to make sure nothing is terribly wrong with her before boarding a boat.

Our Seattle hospitals are all excellent. Really. Harborview is the regional trauma center, so she might want to avoid that. I had two surgeries at Virginia Mason that went very well.

She might want to look for an urgent care center rather than an ER.

Is one location of Swedish better than another? Which one is the closest to downtown?

Do not want to got to an urgent care as she may need a scan. My husband is concerned she might have a blood clot. She has had back/disc trouble recently, so I guess there is a possibility this is related, but not likely.

What about Northwest Hospital and Medical Center? Shopping for a hospital online is not easy! My husband is at work and wants me to find a few and he will call the ER to make sure it has what he thinks she needs. As a non medical person, I look at the websites and think they all look great.

My goal is to have a few hospitals for my husband to call in the next hour or so. Feel free to keep suggesting hospitals. Again, location is not an issue as they have a car. Or course, she would love to be see ASAP and continue on their day in Seattle.

My husband has spoken to the ER doc at Swedish and liked what he heard, so that is where she is going; that is assuming she will now go. Now she thinks she is making this all up, but if she was bother enough to call my husband, she must be having a problem. My guess is her leg had swelling from the long flight Thursday, but I am not a doctor! I guess there is a chance she could have a blood clot, so my husband wants her to be seen ASAP.

My sister in law just called and all is well. I thought she still had the rental car, but they had already returned it so they took a cab to the hospital. While she told the driver to take her to Swedish, he dropped her off at Virginia Mason Hospital. She noticed everything said Virginia Mason, but she just thought it was part of the hospital’s name. I am not really sure when she realized she wasn’t at Swedish.

The ER doc took bloodwork and had her get an ultrasound and everything returned normal. Now she can get on the cruise and not have to worry that something was wrong.

Thanks again for the hospital suggestions even if she didn’t go to the right place. The hotel had also suggested Swedish, so she was comfortable with the recommendation.

I understand it is a beautiful day in Seattle. I know my SIL and BIL are happy to be walking around in nice weather as they head to the market.

Virginia Mason is a good hospital, too. I haven’t been to the ER but they’ve implemented the surgical checklist system that got such good play on the TV show ER (when John got his kidney transplant), and I got to see it in use when I had my knee surgery in January.

Glad your sister is ok, and it probably didn’t matter a bit to her outcome, but I would be angry that a taxi driver would deposit someone from out of town 2 or 3 blocks away at a totally different hospital. Not worth dealing with from out of town, but should go on his or her record… total incompetence.

dragonmom- I kind of wondered the same thing, but I am going to assume the driver misunderstood and maybe just heard hospital. While my sister was from out of town, I am surprised when they pulled up to the ER and saw Virginia Mason on the sign that she didn’t say something. I would have at least asked if we were at Swedish; but not my sister in law!
