Its done to lawyers too.

"Maybe he thinks someone who had a fever is “ill.”

It was clear IIRC Friday night or at the latest Saturday morning and reported all over the news that she not only didn’t have a fever when it was taken with regular thermometer; she was negative for Ebola. Are you telling me that Christie didn’t hear that at all? Do you really believe that no one told him she was negative for Ebola, had no fever and was not ill? Yet, he is still saying she was “obviously ill” today!

What I’m saying is that the NJ Department of Health gave a statement today, as reported on ABC News and elsewhere, that she did have a fever.!!!

I’m not an expert in the area, but my understanding is that the quarantine authority is quite broad. And I think it is debatable whether she was “kept” being held after the tests came back negative. She was discharged on a Monday, within 24 hours of the second test results. Are two tests standard? We don’t really know anything about her chart, whether two tests were indicated, or whether she had other symptoms, only the doctors who treated her do, and they can’t tell us.

I would. I saw a LOT of extremely negative comments about Cuomo here and elsewhere.

"And I wonder what your thoughts are re Governor Cuomo’s agreement with Governor Christie on this issue. If Ms. Hickox had landed at JFK and been guarantined in New York per the governor’s statements, you would be using the same adjectives to describe his conduct, right? "

I certainly would! I would hope that once the nurse showed no fever and tested negative for Ebola, NY would not have kept her quarantined since she was asymptomatic.

As to his bromance with Christie - H is home from his marathon and is pretty sure he knows exactly what went down when Andrew decided to enact the policy. All I will say is that Andrew believes he is the smartest man in the room, no matter what the issue.

What I’m saying is that the NJ Department of Health gave a statement today, as reported on ABC News and elsewhere, that she did have a fever.!!!

No they did not. Here is the statement from NJ Dept of Health from ABC News:

The New Jersey Department of Health issued a statement this morning that Hickox has been “symptom free for the last 24 hours,” and that it decided to discharge her after consulting with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

<a href=“Ebola Nurse Kaci Hickox Will 'Understand' Her Quarantine, New Jersey Governor Says - ABC News”>http://abcnews.go.com/Health/quarantined-ebola-nurse-kaci-hickox-released-jersey/story?id=26479917

That is a CYA statement.

Or, maybe its just a true statement.

The fever was recorded by an unreliable device, AND was not confirmed by the more reliable oral thermometer, AND was easily explained by Ms. Hickox’s distress at being detained, AND was gone within a couple of hours. AND she has tested negative twice now. That is not “ill.”

“Or, maybe its just a true statement.”

We knew on Saturday, at the latest, she tested negative for Ebola - so of course the statement she was symptom free for the last 24 hours is true. She was also symptom free for the last 48 & 72 hours as she was NEVER ill. Are you actually going to argue the nurse was ill?

So the rule is “detention until 2 negatives are recorded”? So weird that they didn’t mention that until today. All weekend, it was “21 days, period.” And if in fact, the rule is 2 negatives, why did it take them 24 hours to release her?

And I never heard anything about “symptom-free” as the Dept of Health is now trying to say.

Methinks they’re surprised by the blowback. They picked the wrong girl to incarcerate, that’s for sure.

The 21 day quarantine order is still in effect, LasMa. If she was a NJ resident, she would still be quarantined to her home for the remainder of the 21 day period.

No, I am not arguing either way. I am not convinced it was all a big lie and conspiracy.

Will they keep a guard at the door of those who are quarantined? Use ankle bracelets?

Why couldn’t this have been done on Friday night? At that time, they were saying that she absolutely, positively had to be isolated under the watchful eye of the authorities. What’s changed?

“No, I am not arguing either way. I am not convinced it was all a big lie and conspiracy.”

So how do you explain Christie’s statement today, that she was “obviously ill”? What facts do you have that Christie’s statement is true?

I don’t think anyone has said it was a conspiracy. Just that it is bad policy, carried out in a very poor way and that the policy is completely unnecessary.

Maybe not more “ignorant,” but certainly politically motivated to do and say things that will be covered favorably by the media and boost his reputation among potential voters.

Again, I’m not an expert, but yes I believe those who defy quarantine orders can be arrested and then forcibly detained.

Another way to say this using numbers is the fever standard is wanting and could easily lead to trouble because of the fact that 13 - 15% of people who are infected AND contagious with Ebola never present with a fever, as either a symptom throughout the course of the disease to death or as the leading symptom.

Therefore, using fever as the contagious standard means about 1 in 6.5 people who are contagious will be missed. When the end result is a disease with a high mortality rate, a 15% error rate is a rather high miss-rate to hand one’s hat on in terms of determining life and death risk to the general public.

Idk what changed, LasMa, and none of us can know since we weren’t there. What is the standard for testing and discharge at a hospital? Is it typical that the moment a test result is recieved, it is immediately read by a physician and the patient is immediately cleared to walk out the door (assuming he waits for clearance). Or does it take a few hours, especially on Sundays?
