Scary.
And I can’t reach my DD. She was supposed to be in the city today. Since we are on the west coast, I called late. Hoping she is fast asleep…
I got alerts on my cell when they found the second device at 27th and 6th Ave. This one didn’t go off. It doesn’t sound like anyone was badly hurt. It is a scary time. My fear is this is just a practice run, and the next target would be a place like Time Square.
I was waken up by an alert on my cell phone at 4:00AM.
My son and I were driving from Lincoln Tunnel towards downtown on 7th Ave at 7:30PM and there were lots and lots of people out and about. We heard sirens and helicopter throughout the night from this apartment.
Prayers for those who are injured and I hope nothing else like this happens again although I know it really can’t be prevented. Too many crazies in the world.
I used to work a block away from where that happened (22nd and 6th), that is a very busy area, especially at night. What is weird (thankfully) is the way the person who did this put the bombs, they were placed in dumpsters according to the news reports, which probably helped save people’s lives, it basically muted the force of the bombs.
I think the mayor of NYC once again made himself look like an idiot, he said that the bombs were ‘deliberately placed’ but refused to call it an act of terrorism. While they obviously don’t know who did it (thought with one of the bombs failing to go off, they will have an easier time finding out who did it), the placement of the bombs, in a crowded area set off when there would be a lot of people around (Saturday night? That block has a lot of restaurants and stores and clubs and such), there could be little doubt, especially since there were two bombs involved. There have been bombs set off by people with a grudge (George Metesky, who bombed Con Ed in the 1950’s, made him a folk hero in NYC given the way people think about Con Ed), but this is unlikely to be that, it could be a crazy person just out for a thrill, but again, given that this was a pressure cooker bomb with shrapnel (similar to the one used in Boston) and there were two of them, not that likely IMO. The mayor could have said that given that the bombs were set up to main and kill apparently random people passing by it likely is an act of terrorism, designed to frighten ordinary people, but that at this time we can only speculate on who and why.
I think he’s wise to not call it an act of terrorism until we know more. People equate “act of terrorism” with ISIL these days and we don’t know enough to say that.
DD is safe. It was a long night here on the West Coast.
My son is safe too. He doesn’t live that far from that area.
I think it is premature to start the blaming game. There will be plenty of time for that.
A friend living on the West Coast texted me last night asking if I was ok.
He was relieved that I don’t reside in nor was I in the vicinity when it happened.
However, the area where the explosion happened and where the second suspected device was found isn’t too far from where I grew up. The public library branch where I got my first library card and borrowed my very first book at 5 is just a block away from the explosion.
Dh and I lived on the corner of 23rd and 6th for 2 years. Wasn’t such a happening place 20 years ago but very convenient to everything. Surreal.
If the device didn’t go off, why is it referred to as a second “explosion” in the title of this thread?
I said “second” because of the one in New Jersey earlier yesterday.
Son’s gf lives around the block from the blast. She was home at the time and heard it. Glad she is ok as I’m sure her parents are also.
I understand…but the post upstream here said the one in NYC did not go off. So…what “explosion” would there have been? A threat of an explosion, yes.
But others are saying they heard an explosion.
@oldfort…did the thing go off…or not?
I have been wondering if the scattered attacks are all loosely connected…Mall of Americs slashings, NJ marine run and the NYC bombs.
We did kill that top ISIS guy a few weeks back and they promised retribution.
Pipe bomb explosion in New Jersey; explosion in Chelsea. Two explosions.
There was a second device found in Manhatten. Unexplored. If you can believe the news. Or has this changed?
There are clips of the explosion (from a distance) from surveillance cameras. It seems like an impressively large blast.
One can only hope that these guys blow themselves up soon, like the old socialist/anarchists in the village back in the 70s.
Report from the local newscast was the second device on 27th street was taken away by the bomb squad sometime around 2:30 am and taken to a facility for further examination/controlled detonation.
I’m so confused. I understand that there was an explosion in NJ.
Was there an explosion in Chelsea…or not?
