Second Guessing Syndrome

It’s still only September and it seems that the second guessing has begun. Son finally narrowed his list down to something approaching a reasonable number – and the second guessing begins that the list should have included other schools, etc. Today (because he is applying SCEA) he handed rec packets to teachers – second guessing the choice of teachers. Three teachers were happy to write and he is certain of one but vacillated which one to use more for the other as only two are needed (had to use science for one application.) There were good reasons to go with either. There was no wrong choice. This is my third time around so I’m no stranger to the process but it seems worse now than it ever did. One can second guess as to which essay topic to choose, which school to apply early to, and on and on. I’m just wondering if other kids are feeling the same stress. Back in my day, senior year was pretty fun.

Well, he should just forget SCEA…it sounds like a horrible choice for him. It sounds like he needs more time–drop the EA stuff and especially the SC stuff and give him some time and space to line up his recs and do his apps.

I’m not sure why it’s a horrible choice. He’s already handed off his recs so there is nothing to line up there. And he has done a lot of work on the application already. In his mind, if he gets in early, he can drop some of the other schools and lighten the load. He’s sure about that school, so what is the advantage in waiting? When it comes to second guessing, time doesn’t make a big difference. You can take months to make a decision and still second guess yourself.
