Second quartile TX student trying to get into TAMU Engineering (or at least blinn)

Current senior applying to A&M. Will prob submit application within the next 2 weeks after finishing essay. Starting to worry because of low class rank. Am ok with getting TEAB. 2nd choice major is Econ Bs.

GPA W: 3.92

GPA UW: 3.54 (90 - 91 avg)

Class Rank: 492/1592 (2nd Quartile :pensive:)

SAT: 1460 (760 M, 700 RW), (Will retake in Oct for 1550+ hopefully)

No APs 9th & 10th grade

11th: AP Statistics(5), English Language(4), US History(4), Environmental Science(3)

12th: AP Calc AB,Physics C Mechanics, Macro/Gov,English Literature

ECs: Robotics Club, Started business repairing iPhone lots and reselling for profit, Member of CS related non-profit, Volunteer at local library

In or out of state?

In state

@flamecreator123 Your stats are kinda all over the place.
Yay for NMSF, but course rigor and class rank will definitely hurt. Just taking Calculus and Physics as a senior won’t help, at all. Engineering wants to see you can be successful in math & science, but not taking those until senior year won’t show them.

Both TAMU Engineering and Economics are very competitive. Is there a reason you didn’t have your application submitted in August?

Was mainly waiting for national merit to come out before applying. As for math, I’ve been taking honors math courses since freshman year. I also plan on retaking the sat for a 1500+ score to hopefully offset the low rank slightly

There are MANY engineering students who don’t take calculus or physics until their senior year in high school.

All you can do is apply and see.

As a NMSF, you will have some other options if you need them…and possibly with decent merit aid.

Aren’t calculus and physics c mech (especially c-mech since it’s usually taken after physics 1) pretty standard for seniors?

I’m sure you are right. I was just going off the Stats listed in 11th grade, assuming that was your only math.

TEAB is a fantastic pathway to Engineering, I’m glad you are open to it. Have you thought about applying directly to TAMU Galveston, also?

The 2nd quartile and gpa are going to hurt. A 1460 + NMSF is solid, but not sure how they’ll weigh out vs rank/gpa.

Isn’t galveston one of the options they automatically give you if you dont get into College Station but still not fully rejected?

Galveston can be an option, but it isn’t automatically given-you could be offered McAllen, TEAB or Galveston. You could also be given just PSA (which is a soft rejection, to system schools).
I’d suggest applying directly to Galveston, as well. Applying to Galvy won’t affect your TAMU CS application at all.

Alright, I’ll probably apply to Galveston though at that point I’d probably just go to UTD or something. Do you think I have a good chance of getting at least TEAB if I can get around a 1500 on the October SAT?

Honestly not sure. Just not sure how they weigh rank & gpa vs SAT & NMSF.
Always best to have options.

TEAB options won’t be given out until spring, maybe February. At that point, hosing will be close to full. That’s the bummer of being holistic/not auto admit…housing fills up quickly.

No.

Standard math sequencing in US high schools leads to precalculus in 12th grade. Calculus in 12th grade is one level ahead in math (+1 track).

Typical science sequencing in US high schools has students take physics (not necessarily AP) in 11th or 12th grade, due to it needing higher level math than biology or chemistry (although some schools do physics first in 9th grade despite the lower level of math preparation that they can assume).

The courses I listed were just the APs I took, not all the classes.

UPDATE: I got in last Thursday! Didn’t get an email for whatever reason so I found out yesterday. Still took the SAT but I guess it was pointless

Congratulations! Just wondering, did you apply directly to the college of engineering at College Station? I’m in the same kind of predicament with a 4.0 W (3.46 UW) and 34 ACT. I really want to go to TAMU but I’m not sure what my chances are for applying to the College of Engineering.

@flamecreator123 congrats!!
A&M doesn’t send an email…it’s all communicated via Howdy Portal.
If you want to live on campus, make sure you submit $75 non-refundable Housing deposit and application, as soon as your link opens (it can take 24 hours, after official acceptance appears). Housing selection (in the spring) is based on timestamp Housing deposit is paid.
