Securing a Job without In-person Interviews?

I’m currently in a difficult situation where I am working abroad and want to go back to the US.

Is it somehow feasible to secure a new job while I am abroad purely through Skype interviews?

Or will I have to quit my current position and fly back to the US and be unemployed for several months?

Definitely feasible. I think phone-interviews would be more likely than skype interviews. If they really like you, they might fly you out…but since you’re international I’m not sure. Very few companies are willing to hire internationals because they don’t want to sponsor for VISA unless you have something truly great to offer to them.

Thanks for the reply. Is this more common than I think? I’m surprised this is possible.

To clarify, I’m a US Citizen working abroad, so Visa issues are not a problem. I would like to secure a new job before quitting my current one.

That’s excellent you’re a US Citizen! Definitely makes things a whole lot easier. But I think it is very common. Companies look everywhere for talent. A company won’t deny you an interview just because you are currently not in the states. The time difference might be inconvenient for you however. Depending where you are it could be day time in the US and night time where you are so you will have to work with the interviewer on deciding the best time.

When I was interviewing with Microsoft, there were several people who were studying abroad in Europe that got flown back for a full-day interview. So that might be an option if the firms you’re applying for are fairly large and recruit a lot of candidates.
