Now that I have got my dishwasher & microwave issue behind me, I am onto Christmas shopping. My in-laws mentioned this summer that they would like a safe to keep MIL’s jewelry in. Any suggestions on brands, types? I don’t really know much about safes. Can I get a decent one if I order one from a national chain and have it delivered to them and bolt it down myself?

i bought one from Walmart and got a chain and combination lock from the hardware store.

costco is selling one for less than $200. not sure if it is an one hour heat resistance or two hour version, but I bought the two hour one from Lowes for little over $200.

Odd that this subject should come up now. I recently lost my last parent and last night we were trying to open my parents’ safe. We have the key and the combination, but it won’t open. We are following the directions to the “T”.

We know that we’re doing something wrong and will likely take it to a locksmith today to have it forced open.

In retrospect, we wish my parents had just bought a simple key version or a touchpad version. This dial-thingy is a pain in the tush.

^ I had the opposite problem. The electronic keypad lock on mine got “confused.” It wasn’t a big deal, since I was using it as a fire safe, rather than a security safe.

A safe that you can pick up and take with you just advertises that something valuable is inside.

^^Yes, that’s why I think I need one that bolts into something and is heavy. I figure the kind of safe we need will protect against the average thief.

i would still go with the combination for a college kid. they are likely to misplace the key.
