Seeking advice for job relocation during empty nest years

My initial thought when I read your post was “It’s time to start doing what YOU want to do for you.” You’ve made a lot of sacrifices for your family and it’s your turn. I also know a couple who did something similar when their nest was empty and it worked out fine. You don’t say how far Florida is for you and whether there are convenient/easy/less expensive flights. If you’d make enough more than your costs of maintaining two separate residences and flights home every month or every other week, then go for it. Your kids will get over it.

I also know people doing this. H and I may do this and are actively discussing how to make this happen since we have targeted a place we want to spend half the year in our post-kid years. Our two older are independent now but we still have a few more years of supporting our last in college so doing this incrementally while still earning income is appealing.

2016Barnardmom, you are right, this is supposed to be my time. I have to keep reminding myself. The flights are frequent and average three hours non stop, so that’s doable. Obviously, holidays can get expensive if you don’t plan ahead. momofthreeboys, it is appealing to try a place different than where we currently live, especially, if we don’t have to worry about schools anymore as we would if we have school age children. Though, Florida might not be the retirement place we are looking for, it is a step towards trying out somewhere different without the full commitment.
