My Son has been admitted as a sophomore transfer to both Georgetown SFS and Tufts, and, to be honest, we’re having a hard time figuring out where he would be happiest.
I’d love to hear from current students, transfers, parents, or recent graduates.
Georgetown
Is the social environment welcoming, or does it feel clique-ish?
How much do the selective clubs matter socially?
If you’re not in those clubs, is it easy to find your people?
Is the culture really as preppy and polished as people say?
How do transfer students fit in?
Is Georgetown really as good for internships and career opportunities as its reputation suggests?
Tufts
Is the reputation for being friendly and collaborative accurate?
How easy is it for sophomore transfers to make friends?
Since many sophomore transfers live off campus, does that make it harder to feel connected?
Does living off campus change the overall experience in a meaningful way?
thank you so much and for both schools. The outcomes for internships, jobs etc.
Has he visited both schools? Both have a high proportion of full pay students. What housing would he have at each school?
IMO it’s hard to beat Georgetown for anything SFS related. Assume at both schools that transfers will not have access to highly selective clubs (this is not uncommon for transfers). Unless your S is introverted or doesn’t want/won’t do well in a competitive environment, I would lean Georgetown for the SFS opportunities that DC affords.
I’d give the edge to Gtown but fit is very important.
One thing to look into is that Jesuit colleges typically have large core requirements. Consider if the student can complete the core and all required classes in the next three years.
Knowing what they didn’t like about their current school would be helpful here, too!
And what sort of jobs? Their websites will be the best source of factual, non-anecdotal info on this… always check knowledge rates (% of students who answered - often many don’t)
These are two very popular choices for people interested in IR becauseboth are excellent, and most students have a clear favorite after visiting because they have pretty different vibes.
Was there a favorite before applying?
Georgetown has always had the edge for being in DC, but that may not be quite the draw it usually is with the government having experienced the turmoil it has. If that’s a pro for you, talk to current students to see how that is impacting their experience.
@DSW1 could you please post answers here to the additional questions being asked?
Where is your son transferring from?
Which of these colleges is his preference…because really, that is a very strong key element of the college choice decision. Where does this student see himself being happy until he graduates with his undergrad degree. Both are excellent options.
