Seeking input on men’s wallets

Ds’s birthday is coming up. He is turning 23. He says his wallet needs to be replaced. I’ve asked him to look and send me some suggestions as I think that can be a gift that many might be particular about. He has not yet done that, so I’m doing a bit of looking in the hopes that I can steer him to a few websites so he can look to see what he might like. I’m pretty sure what he has is a pretty typical bifold wallet, but I also know he carries it in his front pocket, even though I don’t think it is a front pocket type of wallet. Not sure how “slim” it is. It’s probably a “dad” wallet - lol. Not sure if it is leather or what. I know it has RFID protection.

I’m looking at Titanium wallets - very James Bond cool! Many with bottle openers!

I’d appreciate any insights on what men value in wallets in terms of styles, features, and materials. Need not be a man to reply!

TIA!

Might help if he specified whether he wants a minimalist wallet (i.e. as small volume as possible) or a more traditional one. More traditional wallets keep each card in a separate slot, but minimalist ones may be designed to stack several cards together in one slot. Minimalist ones may have smaller capacity (for cards and/or currency).

Personally, I’m a fan of leather. I’ve given Frye wallets to men and women many times and all have been loved. They age well.

I think there may have been another wallet thread within the last several months, and I recall varied desires and practices.
For example, I know one of my sons only uses a card carrier much of the time, and the other doesn’t use a wallet that I’m aware of.
For husband it needs to be a particular size and not very thick.

S carries a front pocket wallet. It’s a bifold wallet that has a thin bill clip on the inside fold. He didn’t like wallets with a bill clip on the outside because the money was too visible. The wallet doesn’t hold very many cards. I think 3 cards and his driver’s license.
H has a slim fold wallet that he carries in his front pocket. It’s very close to the size of a traditional wallet but thinner.

Tyvek wallets- SIL loves his and just bought a new one. Pictures don’t do them justice, better to see in person. Very minimalist.

I really like my Ridge wallet in titanium, which is pretty good in terms of the number of cards it holds (up to about 10 fit easily). I prefer the cash strap to the money clip as it seems more secure.

My husband, son, and son-in-law love their Bellroy wallets from Australia.

The website says they have free shipping to the States.

I think you can get a million suggestions but without knowing for sure what he currently carries, how it works for him, what is important to him (what it’s made of? Minimalist? Color?) you’d be grabbing straws.

I think people in general carry less cash on them anymore?? So not as much need for bulky paper bills area. You can download an app from your health insurance carrier and not carry your insurance card. Does he carry A credit card - or multiple?

I’ve always carried a slim leather bi-fold wallet. When a had to replace my last wallet a couple of years ago, I decided to go with a slim no-fold wallet. Here’s a variation of it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CH3N8ZW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I love it. As I was considering the change, I thought long and hard about whether it would be big enough. I thought I carried too much stuff in my bi-fold to switch to a no-fold. But after I made the switch, I realized I was carrying around stuff I did not actually need.

Now, I carry my drivers license, three or four credit cards, and some cash. I rank the decision to switch as one of the best decisions I’ve made in the past 5 years.

^^^ Something exactly like this is what my 28 year old son carries. And my nephews now that I bought them the same thing!

Thanks, all! Yes, I realize I am grabbing at straws until he gets more specific. These links will help as I can share and maybe he will give me a few, “Cool!” Or “No way!” responses. Once I can get him to narrow down to a “type,” maybe he will work with me to search a bit more within that type.

Interesting thoughts about the cash strap and the issue of one’s cash being visible.

I think he probably carries to much just out of habit. Thanks for reporting you were happy with making the change, @EconPop. I can share that as well.

@doschicos ’s link doesn’t work for the Frye. :frowning: I will look at the others and also seek out the brands some of you mentioned. The Ridge Titanium ones were what I had looked at.

Not sure why that link isn’t working. There are many online. Frye Men’s Logan Slim Wallet.

This brand is considered really cool among youngsters.

@BunsenBurner - I like the leather one in that brand. Canvas seems too casual for me for a young professional, but he does live in CA. But, he can look through this brand as another option, too - thanks!
