We watched a movie from Japan called Swing Girls, the full movie is on YouTube. Kinda Breakfast Club meets School of Rock, but with big band music. A comedy with subtitles, we liked it a lot.
We recently watched 3 things: Juror #2 (Max), Conclave (Peacock) and A Complete Unknown (movie theatre). Juror #2 was entertaining but not great. I like Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette.
I enjoyed Conclave a lot more, although I also think Conclave would’ve been good to see in a movie theatre just to better appreciate the pageantry of the costumes and cinematoraphy. As mentioned by others, it has a great cast.
Finally, we saw A Complete Unknown in a movie theatre on Monday. I totally loved it and could’ve watched another hour of Timothee Chalamet and Monica Barbaro singing. I did get a bit sick of poor Elle Fanning’s teary eyed scenes. Mr. Corinthian is a self-described “Dylanologist.” He owns literally hundreds of books about Dylan, has been to Hibbing, MN, has attended conferences at the Dylan Center in Tulsa, and for years has participated in a weekly videoconference with other Dylanologists, most of whom are academics. (They have not yet had their group discussion of the movie.) DH liked it, but interestingly the thing that I loved (all the singing) was his biggest criticism. Not that he thought it wasn’t good, he just thought there was too much of it at the expense of dialogue and more character development.
D24 and I went to see it on Christmas Day. We both really enjoyed it. D24 didn’t really know who Dylan was (she said, “I’ve heard of him, but not sure I could name any of his songs…” ), but the movie was such a good story it didn’t matter. Timothee Chalamet was phenomenal, I thought.
We also just saw the Dylan movie the other day. Very much enjoyed it. Saw the Saturday Night Live first episode movie on the airplane. It was meh.
We also like Conclave a great deal, although if we hadn’t seen how conclaves work in Angels and Demons, it would have been even more engrossing. If you don’t know the process, Conclave would be fascinating.
I recall in the lead-up to Pope Francis’ election, the endless live news coverage while waiting for the smoke to appear allowed the talking heads to go through excruciating detail on the process.
I saw Wicked the other day. It was good once I washed my ears out with bleach.
I’ve never thought of Dylan as a singer, just a great lyricist who probably should have let someone else carry the tunes. I’m not a Dylan fan but will see the biopic when it streams.
He’s not. But there’s no denying his artistry.
I’ve seen clips as Timothée Chalamet has been plugging the movie. He spent 5 years preparing. Granted, part was unintentional due to lockdowns, but still pretty impressive. I’ll see the film at some point.
I saw wicked twice in 24 hours, loved it.
We saw Wicked for the first time the other day and loved it. We are big fans of Wicked on stage and have seen it in NYC and many other places.
My BIL had almost persuaded DH to watch Wicked, but we stayed with friends over New Year’s who are big fans who played one of the songs. (I swear it was just like “The Song that Goes like this” from Spamalot. He remembered that he hates musicals and then he learned this is only part one! So it’s a no go. Which is fine with me because I usually hate musicals too unless they involve tap-dancing or rock music.
I did 16 years in Catholic schools and have been through a conclave or 5. I think this movie will be right up my alley.
Just returned from seeing Nosferatu - very enjoyable. A creepy and visually stunning gothic horror movie.
On the basis of Sex- Netflix about the beginnings of RBG. 2018 movie but really well done. Kept our attention.
We liked that movie, too!
H and I saw " A Complete Unknown" today and both of us enjoyed it. I didn’t think I knew a lot of Dylan’s music, but I seemed to know almost all of the songs in the film.
My only issue was the 25 minutes of previews before the movie started. I don’t usually mind a few, but the upcoming films looked overwhelmingly dark, violent and dystopian. The only one of the 8 or so I would make a point to see is “The Brutalist”. I will likely also see the movie called “Green and Gold” because it’s about a Green Bay Packer fan and I told H I would go with him. And truthfully , it looked a lot better than most!
I have the same issue with movies nowadays. Dark and/or gory. No thanks!
Don’t remember if I already posted this, so forgive me if I did…we saw Wicked a few weeks ago. My husband and I really liked it, but our kids were unimpressed. Our younger son, who is an actor, thought that Cynthia Erivo (who played Elphaba) was a fantastic singer, but did a poor job acting. He said that her face had one single expression the entire movie, whether she was in pure joy, anger, or sadness, it never changed. I hadn’t realized that, but I see his point.
Saw Kraven last week. We all enjoyed it.
Watched “Number 24” on Netflix. That was awesome. True story about the Norwegian resistance movement during WW2. I watched it in Norwegian w/English subtitles. Reminded me of my nana saying Norwegian phrases to me & my sister when we were kids. She used to say that her parents weren’t too happy that she married a Swede because Sweden let the Nazis march right through to invade Norway. The movie was really well done.
