One Battle After Another - worth the hype! Excellent performances. Fast paced, politically timely and very humorous at times. I love that the trailer didn’t spoil the movie by giving too much away.
We saw One Battle After Another yesterday and also thought it was excellent. I’m a big fan of Paul Thomas Anderson and this movie did not disappoint.
Saw One battle after another, to a packed theater.
The young actress, Chase Infiniti, was remarkable. Leonardo di Caprio has changed a lot since Titanic (and Growing Pains) and makes fun of his younger days - he’s excellent, especially as the dad-in-his-bathrobe.
Some scenes are just beautiful (the parkour/skater guys on the roof are like a choreography) and the final chase, wow.
So, many films in one: action movie (with a non action hero), comedy, grand guignol/Tarentinoesque, and what I think was meant as a near-future dystopia when it was filmed but is now a chilling reminder that an imagined dystopia has become reality (with the MKU in the role of ICE).
Just saw “After the Hunt” (in a movie theatre). God that was awful. I did what I usually do - read the reviews by Roger Ebert’s team (I like Brian Tallerico). This time, there was a new guy doing the reviews. He gave it 3 stars out of 4. I bought a ticket. If you want to see “America’s Sweetheart” acting like a toxic b***h, then this is your movie. If you want to see a slow-mo version of “Law & Order - SVU” this is your movie. If you want to escape from the world for 2 hours 45 minutes (movie “start time” was 1:15; nine (9!) previews; done at 4:00 pm), you’d be better off at Home Goods or a mall somewhere.
Looking forward to the March 2026 release of Project Hail Mary and hoping it lives up to my expectations! I’m tired of horror movies masking themselves as sci-fi movies. After reading the book, I don’t think this story can be turned into a violent, gory tale, so there is hope.
Loved that book, though not everybody in our book club did. (Even those of us more into science/tech and fans of the book thought there was a lot of detail to plow through.) To me the friendship in the story was the best part. Interested to see how it will be adapted for the screen.
Totally agree! IMO, the science details were at times boring (and not very believable, which made them even more boring). But I still couldn’t put the book down until I finished it! ![]()
On Sunday we watched the 2025 live action remake of Lilo and Stitch - just because we watched the original with the grandkid we babysat earlier. Loved it! The ending is a bit different than the ending in the animated movie. The little girl playing Lilo is soooo cute! And quite a good actor!
Watched ‘the penguin lessons‘ on Netflix. Based on a true story. Excellent movie. Have a Kleenex box nearby.
I really enjoyed Project Hail Mary the first time I read it. Decided to reread it this fall because of all the press it (and Ryan Gosling) got during Comic-Con. I had actually forgotten the integral plot point of the book. But for some reason, I was much less impressed the second time through - parts of it just seemed ludicrous. The adaptation of The Martian is one of my favorite movies. This adaptation to movie will be interesting- but if Ryan Gosling could embrace the character of Ken, he’ll easily pull this off.
He definitely can! He was excellent as Neil Armstrong in First Man.
The Martian is one of our favorite movies, too. Bought a BluRay which we rarely do.
Also hoping this will be good whenever it actually hits the movie screens…
Just watched the documentary on Netflix called The Perfect Neighbor. So well done and 98% of the video is from police bodycams. So interesting. And sad.
I saw it recommended as an exemplary documentary indeed. Frightening, maddening, incredibly well-done.
Speaking of documentaries, we recently watched Ocean narrated by Sir David. Highly recommend. After watching it, I’m not sure I’ll be able to bring myself to eat trawl-caught seafood.
Just watched A House of Dynamite. I liked it more than dh overall. I disliked the ending much more than dh.
H and I watched A House of Dynamite last night. We both thought it was an interesting movie and neither of us liked the ending.
Same here. We weren’t quite sure what to make of the ending.
Also not sure about the ending of House Of Dynamite, but really don’t think there was an alternative given the point being made and that the viewer was being encouraged to think about it. But overall, we thought it was a decent film.
Loved One Battle After Another. In fact, May go see it again!
