So I interned in Washington D.C. this past summer and ended up buying a blue and white seersucker suit. I really love the thing but I am going to college in California next summer (Norcal, Bay Area). Is the Seersucker accepted in Cali for semiformal occassions or would I be sending off Confederate Vibes?

Seersucker is going to be big in the coming years. GQ and similar mags all had big spreads about seersucker this spring and summer (GQ’s had Tommy Lee). So I think you’ll be fine. You can always wait and see - it never hurts to have some variety in your wardrobe, but I predict that next summer seersucker will be everywhere.

What type of shoes do you wear with your suit? I know that white hucks are traditional, but I can’t find any where I live, and I prefer buying shoes that are very versatile and can be worn with a lot of different things and in many situations…

I have a pair of white pennyloafers, but actually I bought a pair or blue shoes that I usually wear. Brown can also work

I bet no one will care that you are wearing seersucker in California. Where I live in the south only old dudes, preachers, and pimpy sorts wear them.

no one will really care, but seersuckers aren’t that common (after living in the bay area for 14 years, I think the first time I saw one was in DC)

I think its ok. I don’t see why one type of suit in one place would be unacceptable in another. Maybe a dark wool suit might be uncomfortable and awkward in cali, but other than that I don’t think it’ll matter. Do what you want. Don’t listen to GQ. GQ is stupid.

As a resident of Ncal, and someone who has been in the clothing business for 25 years, you should know you would stick out like a sore thumb if you wear seersucker in NCalif. Leave it home. For semi formal occasions wear a SS button front shirt or a button down L/S shirt and either khaki’s or dark pleated trousers and you will be fine.

I go to school in the south and hate those suits. Whenever I see someone in them I tend to stereotype them as a certain type of person and its not a good one. I would go with a more professional basic suit

Wow, weird. I guess I never thought about fashions not being basically the same from state to state, especially for business attire. I don’t live in California, though, so I’m just here to express my awe at what people are saying.

I intern as a journalist in the D.C./VA/MD area and see all kinds of suits. I think Seersucker suits look really sharp. IMHO, I wouldn’t buy another suit b/c you fear it won’t be “in style” in Cali. I mean, what would you wear that suit for? To do a job interview? Do you really think the 40 yr old professional you’re with is going to be thinking about how fashionable your suit is? I guess I wouldn’t wear it to a dance, or if you have to dress up for another social function (because people in Cali oddly enough don’t seem to like them, if this thread is any indication), but it seems like an okay thing to have.

Just my two cents.

But like I said, I don’t exactly have experience with this. I live in the DC area and am a chick, so I’m probably the least qualified possible…all I know is when I (hopefully) head off to Cali in Fall '07 I’m going to bring my Southern style with me ;).

I live in California and I had to have some Google action to recall what a seersucker suit looks like.

If that says anything, at all, about how often they’re worn here.

a seersucker jacket with khakis might be nice in cali, but seersucker from head to toe might be overboard…

Yeah, agree with flgirl. If you’re scared of impressions in cali just wear the coat with a white pair of khakis or something. Seersucker is pretty much badass.

I had to google it as well…Texas here.

you know target and samsclub both sell seersucker clothing, but maybe it is only in regional stores.

i live in the bay area. im not quite sure what a seersucker but if wikipedia is correct, ive never seen one before. yea i’d do what they said and go with khaki pants and you’d be fine. good luck in college the bay area’s a fun spot to be. i hope you enjoy it to.

Google Image Search is perfect for these things…Wikipedia needs to die.

ok but on google the suit’s looked normal but they were all just grey suits. maybe im overlooking something. and on wikipedia they said the fabric bunches up or something. watever.

OP: youll b fine just bringit and go with the flow.

I just Googled Seersucker. The first image on mine came up with a zoomed in picture of a blue and white one.

Seersucker is awesome, very fratty…please don’t ruin it bye wearing it if you intend on remaining a gdi…

haha, nirvana, you are my new best friend with all the gdi remarks… wear the seersucker, who cares what the folks in cali think… wear it with a pink bow tie just to show your better than them, oh and i always wear either dirty bucks, sperrys, or rainbows with my seersucker
