Selecting Colleges

I am having problems selecting colleges, you know live, talk and walk science/math. Well let me tell you something about me so that you can help me select a few. I am not a hardcore math/science person. But yes I love doing/creating projects. I have been interested in machines since childhood, you know toying around with every piece of machinery I could lay my hands on. Making a few robots, developing sites, coding have been my interests. I am also into sports. Been playing basketball and volleyball (school team captain). The bottom line is, I love trying new things!

I want to goto a college that motivates its students to work on their own and support their innovative ideas. My major would probably be aerospace/mechanical/physics. I have already decided on apply ED to Dartmouth. If you could help me select a few more it would be great!

Cheers!

bump .

Olin motivates studentsto work on their own.

But getting into Olin is very difficult :(

Georgia Tech. It’s perfect for you. They have one of the best robotics programs in the country, and their engineering programs are first class.

The only problem with Gatech is they dont give out aid! And I need quite a lot of aid…

Someone I know went there and graduated debt-free, from internships and co-ops, which give more than work-study. It is possible.

You don’t think getting into Dartmouth is hard? Looking at your stats, and the fact that Dartmouth is not need blind for internationals and you have no hook, Dartmouth ED is just not likely to happen. If you want a US school with aid you need to look well below Dartmouth.

Hook? Well I thought being the founder and editor of the worlds first ezine for high school students and Special award by NASA was good enough… :)

But hey you never know I might be under the wrong impression.

Just in case others want to see my stats http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=366734</a></p>

EDIT:

I meant they are special enough for me considering I am from India where the major focus is on academics rather than on extra curricular activities.

Carnegie Mellon as well as William & Mary have excellent science /math programs but also have strengths in the Humanities as well.

Sorry ajayc, Dartmouth has maybe 2 or 3 spaces a year for Indians from India with aid. Your ezine sounds great, but it will not compete with the Indian kids would could go to IIT, have 2400s and national honors of which there are many. You will most likely be in the same boat with lots of Indian intnls next spring if you don’t get a hold on what a Dartmouth will take.

haha collegekid100 a student who can go to IIT can never go to Dartmouth! Let me explain. Students preparing for IIT ignore their school curriculum and join some prep centres. So they study for IIT completely for two years! And let me tell you IIT aspirants ONLY study for IIT they have no time for EC activities whatsoever! About the 2400, only 1 in 20,000 gets a perfect score (CB Stats). Talking about National Honors everything stated on my App is at either National or International level. I have left out everything that was at State or school level. You can see my chances thread in International students forum and see in what way people from my country responded to my stats :)

I am not saying that I am the best here but yes I am very competitive applicant compared to other Indians atleast better than those preparing for IIT.

Cheers!

Ajayc, I’ve read many of your posts and I don’t think you understand the US system. I forgot which ivy you first wanted to go for but it seems you decided Dartmouth was easier. I went to prep school with dozens of Asian intnls, so I’ve had a pretty good look. You will have no chance at Dartmouth or any ivy with SATs in the 600s applying as an Indian international. I don’t believe you would even be deferred ED. If you want to go to school here you need to look at schools where your stats fall well above the 75% and where fewer Asian intnls apply.

when did I say I am going to apply with 600s? I will retake in October. And the question about me going to Dartmouth we shall see that in December. As far as I remember I didnt choose any other Ivy as my choice before Dartmouth. If I had wanted an easier choice I would have gone for other Universities.

try Montana State, GREAT non-resident aid!

There’s an Indian intnl. on this site who has applied to Dartmouth three years in a row! I hope you get Dartmouth but I really encourage you to really widen your search as there are many schools outside of the popular ones that would love to have an Indian intnl. Look in the S and MW.

There are 8 ivies, each of which will accept 2 or 3 from India next year. Are you one of the top 24 applying? Top 48?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=367388</a></p>

I will have a look at Montana state :)

I have obviously thought about my reaches and safeties. I am going to apply to ASU Honors Program too. There are other lower ranked colleges on my list too like WPI, North Dakota State <– Safety ;)

Thank you all for your support and feedback :)

EDIT: Woohoo! MSU added to my list :D

I’m from North Dakota, really, don’t go there. There must be a better school even in India for you.

I am just adding that as safety, mate  But why do you say that?
