Selecting colleges!

Basic criteria:

 • Population >20,000
 • Not too hot weather (does not exceed 80 during school year)
 • Public
 • Good college town

Secondary criteria:

 • Architecture/campus
 • Dorm rooms
 • Food
 • Prestige
 • City
 • Semesters > trimesters > quarters

Reaches

 • Michigan (dream school)
 • Berkeley
 • Chapel Hill

High matches

 • Madison
 • UCSD

Matches

 • U of Maryland
 • Purdue

My safety is UMN–I’m guaranteed acceptance because I dual-enroll there. To see my stats go here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/483686-help.html

Just wondering if you think those colleges are categorized right, match all my criteria, and that there are no better alternatives. Thanks!

Here are my stats, copy and pasted for convenience:

You have a good background, and you have a sound plan here. I see no problems.

Yep, you look like a very bright, solid student. I think you have an excellent mix of universities and have them sorted reasonably.

One option to consider though, if you’re looking OOS, private schools will likely be more generous with financial aid.

Good luck!

Okay thanks  I’m just worried, heh. UCBChem, I’m applying to publics because I want my credits to transfer. AFAIK top privates don’t accept dual-enrollment creds. I could be wrong?

Bump. Heh sorry.

What are you interested in majoring in? There could be some other possible schools that might match (and might come up with some $). Ohio State?

Michigan and Wisconsin are so amazingly similar in so many ways…if Michigan is your dream school, Wisconsin is a wonderful option if you don’t get in.

Sociology, with a minor in Spanish. I’ve looked at Ohio State–what do you know about it?

Also, $ is slightly less of an issue because I’ll have 2.5 years of colleges credits under my belt by graduation if all goes well. Assuming these transfer I’ll only have to spend spend two more years in school.

If Michigan is your dream school, apply Early Response (before November 1) and you should get your acceptance by Christmas. Don’t worry, ER is non-binding. Then, you can relax and enjoy your senior year while all your classmates sweat it out for the rest of the year!

I also agree with TourGuide. Wisconsin is awesome. I would say it is equal to Michigan except for not having the same elite graduate professional programs.

I also recommend you apply to Cornell and Northwestern. Both are very similar to Michigan and have amazing Sociology and Spanish departments. They are tougher to get into, but your stats are pretty good.

If admitted to all four school listed above, you would have an awesome selection to chose from.

OSU is a good idea; you could probably get a good merit scholarship.

And since all the UCs run off of the same application, it wouldn’t hurt to apply to UCLA (which you may also like).

^ Yep, check 'em off and send the extra money.

Oh, I have no idea…I always thought college credits were college credits.

Michigan doesn’t sound like a reach to me. Bear in mind that your Board scores and grades would be comparable to the medians of half the Ivy League schools (prior to this year).

BTW, Alexandre is probably your best resource on CC regarding most of those schools. His suggestion sounds pretty good.

Early Response sounds great. Thanks for the input everyone.
