My son turned 18 in May, and we’ve done nothing about registering him. He says his friends told him they all got something in the mail, but we’ve received nothing. Frankly, I’m in no rush to do this but I don’t want to break any laws either. (We didn’t qualify for any financial aid so that’s not an issue, I know FAFSA asked if you were 18 if you had registered).

Will something come in the mail, or does he have to go to the post office and sign up?

All the males I know received something in the mail just before they turned 18, like magic. And I do know one young man whose financial aid for 2nd semester and and summer internship was turned off when he’d turned 18 and hadn’t registered during 1st semester. [Their website](www.sss.gov/FSregist.htm) says he can go to the post office, but it says the easiest way to register is on-line. Despite not having any specific (e.g. finaid, Federal job eligibility) consequences, the site does say the law requires signing up within 60 days of one’s 18th birthday:

There are some scholarships that require that 18 y/o males be registered. Also, I think the DMV of some states require it in order to renew a DL. I’m sure if you go to the Selective Service website they’ll tell you if he’s currently within the law or not.

Last we checked (three years ago when S was 18) lack of registering was not being prosecuted. S got nothing in mail, and we didn’t sweat it. Four months after his birthday, he wrote the essay for the Byrd scholarship at school, and was told that he had to register to complete the application, so he did. Many students check the “register” box on the FAFSA, months after their birthday. Lafalum, I hate this, too, but I don’t think your son was in any danger of prosecution, if that makes you feel any better. (no one has been prosecuted since the 1980s.)

Lafalum-I agree. S did contemplate skipping it entirely. We were still researching when S came home that night and said it came up for the scholarship, and he checked the register box, so it was done. He still wrote an essay describing his CO beliefs, which is dated and saved. I feel a draft is less likely now than I did then, but I still worry, too.l

My 9-year-old daughter just got her second questionnaire for jury duty in the mail last week. We threw the last one out. We’re debating what to do this time around. If we call to point out the mistake, they’ll probably just call one of us in instead…

^^ ID theft. Someone is using her SS# and name. Are you keeping up with all the theft of computers within the Federal and State administrations. So much for Homeland Security. Our local paper describes how illegals now bypass fake ID’s and go directly to legitimate ID numbers for a couple of Franklins.

thats what I was thinking thisoldman
To be called for jury duty, you have to be registered to vote-
unlike college applications, or “scholarships”, which were sent to her from mailing lists, my cat never received jury summons because she has never voted.

Hadn’t thought of this! But just read a big article in the paper about how illegals have had to move to legitimate SS numbers (from fake ones) because employers are checking with Homeland Security to see if the numbers are legit. Stolen wallets and kids SS numbers are a prime place to get legit SS numbers.

The police officer who worked in the ID theft division found out that HIS identity had been stolen! Talk about irony…

Lafalum, why did you hate him registering with SSS? It is doing our duty as citizens. My only problem with registering is why women are not required to register too. Equal rights means equal responsibilities.

No voting is, not signing up for a protential draft situation with a all volunteer army. I think your confusing real life with the paul verhoven movie from a few years ago “starship troopers”.

Just read these - now I’m wondering if there’s a way anyone could have gotten D’s SS# I can’t even think of the last time we ever had occasion to use it…
