Selective Service?

In order for me to complete my FAFSA colleges are telling me to sign up for Selective Service. What does this entail? I have no intentions of joining the military.

Every male in the US who reaches 18 years of age is required to register. (I know my high school boyfriend had to, even though he was a British citizen.) It doesn’t matter whether you intend to join the military or not. The link is www and then sss.gov/

It just takes a minute to do it. You can register if you are 17 years, 3 months or older, but they won’t officially enter it until you are 17 years, 11 months. I’m not sure what will happen since my son won’t be that age until the middle of June. You’d think colleges could figure out his current age!

Ditto to MLG…Here is the link https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfRegistration.aspx

Dman, in case you’re confused Selective Service = the military draft, but it’s highly unlikely you would ever be “called up” for military service. Anyway, you don’t have a choice really, by law all males 18 or over are required to register, and not doing so makes you ineligible for financial aid as well as a number of other things.

You gotta do it! It’ll haunt you for life if you don’t.

I recently had to apply for security clearance. I had to put down my selective service number that was issued when I enrolled.

I find it mind boggling that mothers that profess to love their sons accept this draft sign-up requirement, yet do not complain that someone’s else daughter does not have the same obligation. Curious. Gender conditional love?

Well, I just agreed with my son that it’s sexist that the daughter’s don’t have to also sign up.

It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up. I believe my S’s got a notice in the mail when they turned eighteen. There is no draft and will likely never be. Our country’s volunteer forces are doing a great job.

I am so glad that we support our military at this time. The work they are prepared to do is so important to our country. And then, those who don’t want to serve don’t have to. I know I am stating the obvious, but let’s all support our military in any way we can!

toblin, how do you know that we don’t complain? I think it’s outrageous that my son has to sign up but not my two daughters, and I voice that opinion frequently.

I agree with mamabear and FindAPlace. I just didn’t think this was the appropriate forum to voice that opinion, since it’s not a political discussion.

In some states, you are automatically registered for selective service when you get your driver’s license. My son didn’t need to do anything when he turned 18.

The original selective Service bill of 1980 did require both genders to sign up at age 18. However, due to political pressures, it was changed to just males.
