Self Degrading Essay?

For my college essay, I plan to write about my experience with self perception including my perception that I smelled bad. Although this may seem very funny, it actually caused a lot of psychological and social damage to me and I feel as though I can put my heart in this essay topic. However, I may be seen as a obsessive person who is immature. Today, however, I am cured of this “disorder” and have matured greatly.

Do you recommend that I go for this “self degrading” essay?

Will admission officers accept this?

By the way, I am planning to apply to Ivy Leagues.

Thank you.

If you can be humorous and not gimmicky then go for it. I think if you’re a great writer then this topic will definitely make you memorable. However, I’m concerned about how you plan on explaning any connections to future academic pursuit/ career and personal growth.

Yeah for this kind of topic you’d be fine if you put it in a humurous way, but better not in a eureka kind of get out of a psycho problem. Best of luck~

I say go for it. It’ll stand out, either if you’re witty or if you show that you overcame a truly detrimental problem in your life. Adcoms love people who overcome adversity.
