I did Psych and Comparative Government by self-study. I bought a good review book for each, and read a lot about each of the subjects because they both really interest me. I love foreign politics, and I found that I knew a lot of the Russian and Chinese politics I was supposed to learn in the government course. As for psych, my parents love psychology, so there are a tons of books relating to it as a field all around my house. I kind of walked into both with a lot of prior knowledge, but I don’t think this was entirely necessary.

Some APs will be particularly difficult to self-study, unless you have previous knowledge or general talent. For example, veeery few people are able to just take AP Physics C (electricity and magnetism, not mechanics) through self-study, and most require the class.

You just take it at your school like you would any other AP. At my school you sign up for all your AP tests at once so when you do that you would put whatever you self-studied. It’s not like you have to walk into the room with your class…at least that’s how it works at my school.

Oh right, forgot to answer that question. I took my exams at my school, even though it isn’t an AP school. Just talked to my guidance counselor, did some research of my own, and found out she could register us with the college board for free, and that’s that.

YOU GOT TO DO IT FOR FREE??? I had to freaking pay $88 to take the APUSH exam and next year I have to pay $352 because I’m taking 4 APs…

Ohhh, no, I mean it was free for the school to register with the College Board to even be allowed to administer AP exams. I had to pay the same fee as you.

Oh, phew! I was gonna say…there’s something SERIOUSLY wrong with that haha

The fee steadily goes up every year. I remember it was like $83 when I was a freshman. Our kids will end up paying like $150.

Hopefully by the time we have kids and they are our age the world will have figured out a better system for assessing preparedness for college than standardized testing of any kind.

And I was about to say I’d feel bad for our kids if they had to pay that much, except it will be us paying, not them…LOLOLOL
