Self supporting Student

Hi All,
Just want to know if anyone knows that who is qualified to be self supporting student. For example , if student is making around 15K a year and filing tax seprately,

can he be considered as self student ???

can he get aid based on his income or his parent’s income is also involve ???

Thanks in advance
Bill

You need to have been legally declared an emancipated minor in order to exclude your parent’s income. I am not sure how this would work if you are actually 18 and move out and have your own residence. But if you still live at home it’s a long shot.

He is already in the college and he is 20…just filing the return separetly this year because of his income…

Extremely unlikely but he should check at his college bursars office to be sure. Frankly, his scenario is commonplace.

is he claimed as a dependent on his parents return? Is he on their medical insurance? if the answer to either of these is yes then I doubt he can claim he is self supporting.
