Selling hair?

Has anyone here ever sold their hair? I’m looking to sell mine online. I know about thehairtrader.com but I was wondering if anyone had any personal advice. I have about 12 inches of virgin light brown hair that I would like to get money for. Thanks!

No idea how to sell hair, maybe someone else will know. D2 has just been considering getting her hair cut and donating it to Locks of Love (making wigs for child cancer patients). So that is another option, although there is no profit except a good deed in it.

Locks of Love isn’t all they are made out to be. Google “locks of love scam” for more info. They get enough donations to make 200 wigs a year but only gave out 117 wigs in the past 7 years.

Do NOT do Locks of Love. I have donated my hair every two years since I was about ten. If your D wants to donate, I can give you places that don’t sell more hair than they use.

I just read the Wikipedia entry on LOL. It looks like there is some controversy around the fact that they sell some hair that is not suitable for wigs, but they had provided 2,000 wigs by 2006 to recipients. The Better Business Bureau gives them a reputable charity standing. Don’t believe everything you read on the “scam” sites.

I should add that their website is quite specific about the fact that not all hair received is suitable for wigs for kids due to bleaching, grayness, length, etc. So they are upfront about the fact that they do not use all they receive for various reasons.

I don’t believe everything, but I DO know more than a wiki site about it and I know organizations that use much more hair. Some how, other orgs find almost 100% of hair usable.

Well, it sounds like the OP is looking for other sites… although he/she is interested in selling, not donating. Please list them, as those who would consider donating might be interested.

A few years ago a friend of mine sold a longish pony tail of thick, medium brown, untreated hair on Ebay for more than I would have expected, though I don’t remember the exact price. Due to the questions asked by the buyer and the sorts of other transactions made by the buyer there was some speculation the hair was going to be used in some sort of fetish way.

Wigs 4 Kids is what I donate to. I have a list at home I can post later. I support small charities rather than big ones because there’s less overhead.

I know a few people who sold through companies. They had special shampoo sent to them a few weeks before the sale. I don’t know the company.
