I just re-posted my item. We’ll see what happens.

We have sold four cars on Craigslist. We also had them on Autotrader. We did not get a single call from the autotrader ad. H always met them at a neutral location.
Regarding buying- My D had her bike stolen at her school. The bike showed up 3 days later on Craigslist in a town about 45 minutes away. We did not want her contacting the thief so she put the link in her police report. Though by the time the police look into it if they even bother the bike will have been sold.

S2 buys and sells a lot on CL–Dodge diesel trucks and parts. He uses detailed photos on the transactions either way. Both he and his buyers must ask the right questions and know what they are seeking, because buyers don’t usually leave without it and neither does he.

More than a few times, I am the one here when they pick up. Hmmm, I just decided I need to question my safety more. I live on the state highway and have a big protective German shepherd, but still…

VH-we actually sold a car on Craigslist a number of years ago, and it was quite expensive. However, my recent experience with Craigslist has been very poor-tons of scammers and all sorts of ridiculous emails sent to me. I have been trying to sell a brand new iPad still in the shrink-wrapped box, have the receipt showing what we paid for it, selling it for reasonably under the cost at the Apple store and have had no legit buyers. Posted pictures, the whole thing. When I post stuff for free-just come take it away-that’s when I get people to respond within a matter of hours.

Momof3sons, I’m curious to know how much below retail you’re asking, and how old it is. Do you know if Apple would honor the warranty? If not, it’s worth a lot less than retail. I’ve been looking for an iPad on eBay and CL, but haven’t found the right combo of condition and price yet.

some one tipped me this from the last posting.

when you post on craigslist, you do not select any email options, rather, put your phone number in the description. I did just that and I do not receive any emails or scams, scamers won’t call you, they will only email you.

Another option for folks wishing to donate is contacting your United Way and offering it to a nonprofit. You can get a DMV tax deduction with receipt.

I just sold S1’s trundle bed on Craigslist. (Finally!!) The buyer is about an hour away from me so he’s hired a mover to pick it up. To pay me, he deposited the money in my Paypal account. Apparently all he needed was my email address.

I thought that was very cool. I didn’t know one could do that.

ETA: Now I’m nervous. He could have his “mover” take the item and then reverse the Paypal transaction, right?? I still think he’s OK – he gave me his email address, which is a work email, and I looked up his website. He seems kosher; he has a graphic design business. I don’t really care about the $$$ on this item – it’s only a whopping $150. So I guess I’ll go ahead.

Stay tuned.

Take pictures of the bed now. Take pictures of the truck with markings and license plate. Take a picture of the driver and any helpers. Have the driver sign for pick up. Take a picture of their drivers license.

Keep all of this in a file for at least 2 years

Hmmmm. Interesting.

I think it will be fine…but if not, at least the bed will be gone!

Can’t “reverse”, but can dispute. Do what AXW suggests to prove your case in case of a dispute.

We just bought a car on CL. it is quite different than it was a few years ago and frustrating. Even though I was looking under the “owners only” (no dealers) category, a lot of the cars listed were obviously by small sketchy dealers. Also I would say 75% of the cars listed were salvage titles. We finally came up with a list of 3 possibilities in Los Angeles about 1 hour away and got lucky. We bought the first one we looked at. Got a very fair price, low mileage, from a mechanic who owns his shop. He had a lot of amazing Yelp reviews both for his work and his honesty. We were able to change the title over right then at a smog shop down the street. All worked out perfectly but CL is definitely not what it used to be for cars. A lot if scammers. We looked at autotrader and some other car sights also but they were the same. I like the old days when people drove around with for sale signs in their windows or there were parking lots where everyone knew there would be cars for sale, but no one does that anymore.

Very Happy, I wouldn’t worry about paypal. I know people here who hate it and are very distrustful but I haven’t had those problems. I sold some clothes on a Facebook site and sent out paypal invoices. I didn’t sell anything that I would be upset if I lost the money. I put my items in the mail once the money cleared and it’s been fine.

Like you say, the bed is gone.

I hope this works out for you, but I would not want to be paid via paypal for stuff sold on craigslist. [Pay Pal Scam | Craigslist’s Dirty Little Secrets Revealed](http://craigslistpostingsecrets.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/pay-pal-scam/) I sell a fair amount of stuff on craigslist and always specify exact cash only. OTOH, I have left items of small value on my front porch for folks to pick up and have them leave the cash under the front mat, but it is always something I could afford to have the buyer walk away with without paying. I do use paypal several time a year to reinburse friends and relatives who buy things like concert tickets for a big group.

IN further reference to the car we just bought (post 73) , the seller would only take cash, which was fine as that what was what I had planned on. Once we knew we wanted the car, I just went to my bank up the street and withdrew the cash. The seller said he has friends who have been scammed using both money orders and PayPal. If I were a seller, I would worry about taking thousands of dollars in cash because of counterfeit hundred dollar bills. At this point I don’t know the best way to go. If I were selling a large item, I might want to meet at the buyers bank to get the money directly.

This certainly was a rarity but a few months ago, a man here in Ontario who was trying to sell a truck on Craigslist, Kijiji and Auto Trader went for a test drive with the prospective buyers and didn’t return. His body was found eight days later. It’s a reminder to use common sense and to be careful when dealing with strangers from online sites.

There have also been bad guys who go to test drive a car at an auto dealer and harm the sales person. Nowadays, auto dealers take a copy of your drivers license and leave it at the dealer while you are out with the sales person driving the car. That way, they at least know who you are. Or who you allege you are. And they can do a quick background check on you with your license number.

I’ve posted about how happy I’ve been selling things on craigslist, but my last attempts have been very disappointing. It must depend on the item. I had 12 sold-out concert tickets (willing to sell singles) and listed them on craigslist in 5 nearby cities. I had two calls wanting to buy at a much lower price, two telling me they were ready to buy (and never came through), and one who sent me a link to a computer virus (didn’t click on it, but googled the strange response and found others that did). I posted the tickets on ebay and all were sold within a week.

takeitallin:

There have always been scams related to cars - I guess because they’re relatively big ticket items that most of us end up buying/selling. eBay seems to go out of its way to put a lot of cautionary notes on its website regarding vehicle purchases which is a good thing.

I haven’t purchased or sold a car via CL but I would consider it but would be careful about it just as I would with autotrader, eBay, the newspaper, or any other means (even a sign in the window). One always needs to be careful about salvage titles, bad titles (including stolen vehicles for sale), previously totaled vehicles due to frame damage, flooding, etc.

I’m glad you found a good one.
