Semester Abroad

I am curious how the semester abroad program (junior year?) works for students. Am I correct that students who want to do this need to take a math class during the summer after sophomore year? Why is this?

If anyone here has done it, how has this worked out? Meaning the semester abroad.

Now that I read this, I’m curious too. How does this work?
I looked up in HMC website, but it has meager information.
I can’t even find a list of colleges you can attend abroad.

@maruhan: A list of approved programs (including colleges) is here: [Approved Programs](http://www.hmc.edu/academicsclinicresearch/internationalopportunities/studyabroadprogram1/pending/approvedprograms.html)

Both of you might like to read the FAQ ([FAQs](http://www.hmc.edu/academicsclinicresearch/internationalopportunities/studyabroadprogram1/FAQs.html)) and contact the email address listed there. It’s timely; according to geek_son, they’re making a presentation to students about it next week.

As to the math thing – not even math majors are required to take summer math in order to study abroad, but summer math may be a handy way to free up space in the course schedule and ensure that the core is out of the way in time. Mudd has published some suggested course schedules for students planning to study abroad in each major. [Meet with Your Advisors](http://www.hmc.edu/academicsclinicresearch/internationalopportunities/studyabroadprogram1/howdoigetstarted1/meetwithyouradvisors.html)

Summer Math is actually mostly for engineering majors, since they have the least flexibility in their schedules. Though its not necessary, summer math makes studying abroad and scheduling in general a lot less painful. However, I’ve heard that with changes to the core there might not be as big of a math requirement, and summer math might disappear as a result.

Apparently there’ll be just one session of Summer Math this year (i.e. two half-courses)

HMC’s reducing the core requirements (as previously mentioned here and on other threads), so it should be easier to go abroad in future years. HMC wants to increase the number of people studying abroad, so you can be sure there are options available for you to get everything in if you’re interested in going abroad.
