USC has many study abroad options, but they don’t feel that semester at sea has the type of setting and education level appropriate for their students. At USC, the immersion experience is one of the centerpieces of studying abroad. In the semester at sea program, students travel constantly throughout different countries, generally staying with the other American students on their ship, instead of experiencing the cultures on their own. Also, ships stay at port for only a short period of time, keeping students from being a part of the country’s culture.
