SEMI-POLL: Is it okay to wear another college's apparel?

It’s not a matter if whether you can wear it or not, it’s why.

I don’t understand why not. I have shirts from a few other colleges that i bought in high school because I needed sweatshirts. Some because I liked the school, but like, I was at a summer program at BU and I didn’t bring a sweatshirt and it got cold, so now I have a BU sweatshirt. I might wear something from my current school first, but sweatshirts are expensive, I’d feel a little guilty buying more because I couldn’t possibly wear something from a school I don’t attend.

Its no big deal. Just look at college apparel as another market. Why should one’s residence dictate one’s demand?

In fact my Caltech tour guide was wearing a Carnegie Mellon jacket. We asked why, and he replied my sister goes there.

I believe this is the exception to the rule. Everyone should own some sort of Wake Forest clothing. To purchase some visit:

I also find it funny how back in high school some student would wear sweaters of some college before he even got admitted.

if you wear a stanford shirt and you go to berkeley - not acceptable

if you goto a small state or private and wear stanford - it fine

well i go to notre dame, and i do sometimes see other college’s merchandise. i personally have nothing against it, but it is in a way against good taste. however, the majority of students who wear college apparel (which at nd is extremely popular) wear notre dame stuff. i figure that alot of the people that wear other schools gear are grad students who went to the school they are wearing or are freshmen that visited the schools they are wearing and didnt want to waste perfectly good clothing.

" 2. Yes, all around. Who cares what you wear?"

This one. I used to wear a T-Shirt from another college (I was accepted to) for gym class at my current college. It’s no big deal really.

I don’t go to sports games or anything like that, but it makes sense that in those cases, a little tact might be expected (especially where alcoholic beverages are involved -_-).

I find it funny that the guy says please reply with a number, and only one person has.

Mine doens’t fit into a number. I think yes only if there’s a personal connection - family member, boyfriend/girlfriend, etc. Not just you like it or it’s near your home.

Ive been wearing college shirts and shorts for over two years. I have shirts from Florida, Miami-FL, BU(Hopefully my school) and my favorite—The University of Alaska. I’ll for sure wear that because people get a kick out of it.

Overall, I dont see it as a big deal unless it was some sort of rivalry. If someone wore a BC shirt at BU i’d be furious :P

It’s more or less fine here. I see people in clothes from other colleges on a daily basis. I have a sweatshirt from one of the colleges I visited. I wear it occasionally. It’s comfortable. And that school has no rivalry at all with the school I’m at
The only time you need to be careful is around a sports event. The girl in the Northeastern sweatshirt wasn’t looked upon too nicely this morning, considering their football team just beat our’s this weekend. And I would NEVER be caught dead in clothes from the University of Maine, since that’s our big rival, however I see plenty of people wearing them, and they probably only have to think twice about wearing it around a sports event. And even then, you’re not likely to get beat up, but you will get some really nasty looks

NO!! NEVER talk about lack of school spirit.

I’m still in high school, and in my setting, anytime there’s a legitimate connection I think it’s ok (though so many people wear random ones I’ve pretty much accepted that too…but some are just ridiculous.)

However, I can see how in college it would be weirder. Though I still think some circumstances would allow for it.

For example, I plan to go to a small liberal arts college that does not have a great passion for sports. This is not a problem for me at all, but coming from Gainesville, Fl, I will always be a gator fan, and since it will not conflict with my school in any way, I see no reason not to comtinue supporting them in the world of division I sports, and wearing their apparel from time to time. Especially considering my mother, grandfather, and half my high school class will have gone/be going to UF.

People here get really agitated if you wear UCLA.

You will get the look of death if you wear a University of Michigan shirt here at Michigan State.

I asked my friend who is going to UC Irvine this question. He is a huge college football fan, and sports USC stuff all the time. He says no one really gives him trouble, probably because UCI doesn’t even have a team to begin with.

Yes, all around. Who cares what you wear?

except your rival sports school. thats trouble waiting to happen, i’d never wear a rival’s sweatshirt to school.

Wear whatever you want. You’re allowed to like schools you don’t attend. I have T-shirts that say “Costa Rica” and “Alaska” even though i’m not from there and never lived there. Visited, liked it, bought the T-shirt. How is this any different? It’s just a show of support – the shirt says, I’m a fan.

I had a very serious boyfriend who was a professor at a university in California, and I always wore shirts from that school when we were dating.

I go to William and Mary and I see a ton of UCLA and Berkley sweatshirts and no one seems to care at all, including me, I don’t even wear my own college apparel though.
