SEMI-POLL: Is it okay to wear another college's apparel?

At a small school you see big college stuff everywhere. I think some of it also is because some of these folks intend on going to grad school at the bigger universities, or just because they support their sports teams.

I’ve got a Pitt Panthers front license plate even if I don’t go to Pitt. My grandfather went there, I love their basketball team, and someday after I land a teaching job I’ll go over the summers/nights to earn my master’s there.

I really don’t see the big deal. Maybe it’s because I’m still in high school.

Some people are really touchy on the subject of wearing college merch before getting accepted, but in my high school 90% of a high school senior’s wardrobe is some sort of college apparel.

Maybe it’s weird once you get into a college? I really don’t see a big deal though. If I went on vacation to the Bahamas or something and I wore a shirt from there that said ‘Bahamas,’ no one would attack me saying “YOU DONT LIVE IN THE BAHAMAS! WHY ARE YOU WEARING A BAHAMAS TSHIRT?!”

So why’s it a big deal with college merch?

If youre college is a big sports program, you shouldnt wear any clothes from other colleges in their conference or any big rivals. Other than that theres not really a problem.

Yes.

My response is a little biased. A lot of my class at Tulane went to other colleges during our “Katrina semester” and bought that college’s stuff. So I see it all the time and don’t pay it any attention. I don’t know on campuses that weren’t affected like though.

I attend a small state school and wearing apparel from our flagship school bothers some people. I personally don’t care. Wear whatever college you want.

I don’t, but don’t care if others do.

Actually, if a friend gave me something with their college name on it, I’d probably wear it just because it’s there…but yeah.

Anyway, I go to LA Tech and see LSU stuff all the time…which is supposed to be a no-no…but Tech isn’t exactly the most spirited school around, so I don’t think the majority of folks care.

It’s bad enough to wear your own college apparel (wow really you go to X college? so does everyone else within 5 miles of where we’re standing).

If it’s a big rival school- NEVER.

Other schools are okay.

For example: I went to Pitt, and if anyone wore WVU or PSU stuff, they would’ve been killed instantly and vice versa. But if someone wore something from, say, Florida, nobody really cared. I’m sure it’s the same at other schools.

wearing stuff from other Big 10 schools or schools like Pitt, is a huge no-no. You might get mugged.

I’ll continue to wear my Chief stuff… the Fighting Illini and I’ll definitely wear my ARMY Black Knights stuff. I’m going to Southeast Missouri State. My sister, who works at Eastern Illinois University (In the OVC with SEMO) wants a SEMO hoodie. The only time I won’t wear my Illini or my ARMY stuff is in the athletic training room.

Just wear whatever you want.

i see a lot of people wearing other UC clothes (davis, SD, SB… even cal…)
i’ve even seen harvard, and a lot of east coast schools.
and then there was the guy wearing a scripps sweatshirt… (scripps being an all-women’s school, i really don’t get that one)

the first one points to the lesser-school theory (cept perhaps cal)
second one could be anything, relatives maybe.
the third one… i’m HOPING relatives… xD

i wear tshirts for colleges that i’ve visited (not necessarily admissions visits, just visits to see friends). i dont own any USC apparel though (i go to UCLA). it’s unacceptable to wear that.

people at UCLA wear stuff from many different colleges, including some top colleges. i wouldn’t be surprised if i asked and they said that they got into that top college but turned it down.

2ish. For the most part, I agree with the poster who said “Of course…why shouldn’t you just wear what you want?” And I like the comparisons to vacation apparel. It’s just another souvenir (of one sort or another…not limited to “I visited”).

I personally like to have some sort of reason (I have a good friend/boyfriend/sister there, I lived/worked/studied there, my friend gave it to me…whatever). I have two shirts that I bought on college tours, neither of which I currently wear, but both of which my high school aged sister has gotten lots of use out of. I have a few friends who all exchanged college sweatshirts for Christmas break their first years. I had BEST be gettin’ sweatpants from my boyfriend’s grad school next year :stuck_out_tongue: A lack of personal affiliation is simply no reason to turn down comfy clothing! As for people just wearing the clothes b/c they live nearby or whatever…knock your socks off, especially if the school happens to have your hometown in the title or something like that. Why not? As for people who have zero interest in and zero affiliation with a school, but for one reason or another, wear the clothing as some sort of fashion statement…it’s a little odd, but I certainly have no reason to be bothered by it.

Tourguides at my school are not supposed to wear other schools’ clothing while giving campus tours, but that’s the only caveat. Other than that, I’ve never met anyone who could care less.

1. I’ll never wear another college’s apparel once I go to St. Thomas. I think it’s just dumb… support your own school. If you wanna wear a different college’s stuff, then go to school there. I guess I can see if you know someone going there, but still, I wouldn’t.

During my college visits I actually judged colleges based on how many students were wearing the college’s apparel compared to how many were wearing a different college’s apparel.

Yea but some I, personally, HATE searching for the right colored sweatshirt//attire, and if I know what color combo I want, I search for the school, and try to get the cheapest one with the smallest logo…

I go to a Division III LAC. Everyone wears their favorite DI team stuff all the time, often times from their home state.

I think that its okay if you have family that went to the school, or if its the college near your hometown. However I do believe if either of the schools mentioned previously (family or hometown colleges) are rivals of the school you go to, then No I don’t think you should wear there gear.

OSU apparel is universal ;O

It’s kind of weird when someone wears a college sweatshirt/shirt that is more prestigious/higher-ranked than the one you attend. IDK…
