Senate Page Program Questions

Hi I’m Izzy, I live in New York and just finished my freshman year of high school. Ever since I was little I have always loved politics. I was recently searching the web about political internships when I came across the senate page program. From the second I read the webpage about it I knew it was something I wanted to do. It sounds like an amazing experience and I would love to find a way to get sponsored either by my senator or an out of state senator. With that said still have a few questions about the program that I would love answered. While I did find some college confidential threads about the page program they were mainly from a few years ago and often contained information about the congressional page program that closed down a few years ago. I decided that since I couldn’t find the thread I was looking for I would just start my own and hope for the best.

So as I said earlier I am a freshman from NY who is extremely interested in politics. I have very good grades with a 95.3 % unweighted average (My school doesn’t have a 4.0 scale), I also am a member of the model U.N. club , The student council , The Gender Equality club as well as the schools newspaper. I also attended a highly selective political conference in Albany a few weeks ago where I was the only freshman in a sea of highly qualified juniors and seniors. The fact that I was one 60 kids chosen for this program I believe shows that I am motivated an accomplished. I am also attending the American Politics Summer institute at Georgetown and am interning on a state senate campaign. I hope that things like this can set me apart from the other applicants of the page program. So now I just want to ask a few questions about this program in the hopes that someone out there can answer my questions … here goes:

Due to my late birthday (I don’t turn 16 until November of my junior year) I will only be able to go to the spring and summer session. I read that school session are easier to get into than summer sessions due to less people applying during the school year , Does anyone know if this is true? Also has anyone attended the spring session? I’ve heard a lot about fall but not a lot about spring so if anyone attended that your knowledge would be extra helpful. If I was attend the school session I would have to go to the page school. Did anyone attend this school? If so, how were the classes? Did they offer AP Classes? How were you able to transition from your normal high school to this unique and atypical school situation? Do you think that the experience from the page made you stand out on college applications? Now I know that I’m asking a lot of questions and I’m sorry this post is so long but I only have a few more to ask just about the process of getting into this program. When I first heard about this program I went online to senator Schumer’s website and found out that he almost always sponsors a page. With that I said I know that this is a very competitive program and I need I every leg up I can get so I thought that if I could apply to multiple senators , some out of state then I would be able to have a greater chance. I looked up every senator in order to find which ones sponsor pages and then went on to email the offices of all those senators in order to find out if they would be willing to sponsor an out of state page. So have any of you ever been sponsored by an out of state senator? Do you know if there is a limit on how many senators I can apply to? Also I know that people say you should get in contact with your senators office about the program, but my senator doesn’t list an email and instead has a page that directly contains the application. Should I still try to email his office or just leave it be?

Again thank you for reading my rambles and thank you for answering my questions

Hi Izzy,
I wanted to answer some of the questions I know the answer too. As for the limit of senators you can apply for…there is none! You can apply to as many as you want. A senator CAN nominate someone outside of their state but a lot of senators prefer someone from their state to sponsor. Right now I am applying for a senator who is outside of my state to sponsor me. I’ve made it to the phone interviews and am waiting to schedule it. You should also know that not all senators are sponsoring either a female or male. This means for one session they will look for female candidates and the next maybe a male. The only way to find out if the senator you are applying for will nominate a certain gender is to reach out to them. You sound like you would be a stand out applicant and I hope you all the best! Hope this helped.

Thank you so much !

I’m glad to know that their is no limit on the amount of senators you can apply to and also that some senators accept out of state pages! Good luck on your phone interview I hope it goes well:)

Hey DibDab, Hey Izzy.

Did either of you ever hear back? If so, which session? So I applied to the 2016 Summer Program for my Senator, and wasn’t called, emailed, or anything! BUT, at the end of summer, I was emailed about the SPRING session, and asking if I wanted to extend my application. After really no thought, I did. Couple Weeks later, I got call, she gave me an interview, and I’m going to be a Senate Page! Just hope all goes well for you!

That’s so awesome, congratulations! Maybe when you get back you can tell me how it was because I actually can’t apply until next year :frowning: I’m deffinitly considering the spring session for 2018 and would love to hear how it goes for you

Hey everyone!
So I applied to be a page for senator Dianne Feinstein of California, and I just got contacted to schedule a phone interview in January! @colin198 @DibDab what did they ask you in the phone interview? Are they mostly political or personal questions? Thanks!
