Sending in two essays?

With my Vassar EDI deadline right around the corner, I need to make a decision on essays.

I’ve written two, to quote readers and editors, “excellent, imagniative, unique, and introspective” essays. I recently mailed my EA app to Lewis and Clark, sending in both essays, but with Vassar being my top choice (and likely my biggest reach) should I send in two application essays? Is it really “the thicker file, the thicker the applicant?”

Thanks

If the school asks for one essay, then I would send one essay absent unusual circumstances.

Imo, sending two shows that the applicant has trouble making decisions and is willing to impose on the Admissions staff, who must read hundreds of essays.

Thanks for your thoughts ADad. I emailed Vassar about this issue this is what they wrote back to me:

"Dear _____ ,

There would not be a problem sending in both. So the Committee understands, make sure that you briefly explain your reason for doing so. Best wishes from Vassar!"

I sent off my application this morning with BOTH essays (and a brief letter explaining why) but as I process that idea of an applicant being indecisive, I begin to feel remorse…

Should I write to Vassar and explain to them that they should only look at one essay once they recieve my application? Or would that show further indecision and hesitance?

You should take sometime to think through that decision. You’re considered flip flopping if you change your mind. Not sure I have any great advice.

First of all, it was good to ask them first, as opposed to simply going ahead and sending two essays.

I would leave it as it is. I agree that it would strongly demonstrate vacillation and indecision now to ask them not to read one of the essays.

You told them your reasons for sending two. Even if they don’t find your reasoning persuasive, they are not imo going to ignore the rest of your application and reject you over that. They will still look at your entire application.
