Sending phone to CSI insurance today. VISA warranty?

S2 dropped the phone in a puddle right before Christmas. It died a slow death as buttons stopped working until all the buttons stopped working last week. It had initially recovered after soaking in rice and a little lukewarm oven time, but it’s time was up…

I’m mailing it today to CSI. We filed a claim and told the truth that it got wet in December and just now died. I’m not sure if that will be a problem or if we’d have been better off claiming it when it happened. We really thought we had saved it. An adjuster was assigned and emailed us to say to mail it in with proof of ownership and proof of student status. I hope that means they are paying it because the internals and screen still seem to be alive and it might have some value for parts. I could sell it on eBay if they aren’t paying. I was able to link it to the computer and use the Blackberry software to delete his contents (good thing, don’t need his contacts and texts out there in the world.)

On another note, We bought the replacement phone with an upgrade discount, but still paid $100. VISA card offers double warranty which is nice (and which I usually forget). It seems that it would cover repair or replace, but I think only up to what we actually paid for the phone. Not the cost to replace it? Does that seem right or am I confused? So if I got it free they’d pay nothing even though a replacement would cost hundreds? It’s not much help if we don’t have another upgrade to use ( which we probably wouldn’t if it was in the second year) Son is not kind to phones, so I am going to get the $5 breakage coverage, extra warranty is another $2 so I was hoping to get by with the VISA extra warranty. My VISA also has 60 day price protection so I am watching the ads. Of course this phone was FREE a few weeks ago.

Yes, that is correct. If you paid $.01 for your phone, and it died, they’d reimburse you the $.01.

They do not reimburse shipping costs. So if you buy a phone for $100, and it dies, and you find a replace for $90 + $10 shipping, they reimburse only $90.
