Essays:
Short – Independent Research at UofL
Personal – Choice about my personal values in regard to Human Ecology
Supplement – About what I can achieve during/after Human Ecology

Recommendations:

 1. Counselor – Unknown
 2. Teacher (Chemistry) – my Science Fair teacher, have known for 3 years, can expect STRONG recommendation
 3. Teacher (Professor) – VERY STRONG recommendation
 4. Extra (Personal mentor, also one of the essay’s reader) – VERY STRONG recommendation

Miscellaneous:

 1. Family of 7
 2. Non-permanent resident (Green card should come by winter)
 3. Very focused in medical field (e.g., research, supplemental essay)

All my essays are read by teachers, librarians, an admission reader from Hamilton College, and a professor from Columbia.
Their comments – strong essays, very personal, but not arrogant.

Am I considered as URM because I’m from Viet Nam? Or is it just Asian in general? Statistically, only a handful of Vietnamese apply to Cornell from Kentucky. Is that a plus?

Does my resident status (4 years in U.S.) make a difference?

Is my focus in pursuing Medicine a plus for Human Ecology? I hear it’s all about “Fit-Match”

Sorry for the missing info.

Be frank. I can handle criticism :)

For your questions:

 1. No, you are not a URM if you’re from Vietnam. You’re Asian American and that’s all (as far as admissions are concerned).
 2. Officially your 4 years in the USA does not make any difference. However, admissions committees will probably know about it; the question is whether or not they’ll care enough to overlook your (significantly) low CR score.
 3. Any human-oriented acitivities are an advantage for HumEc. However, HumanEc is not geared towards specifically churning out med students, and I don’t think that your activities are partcularly human-interest oriented.

That being said, you’ve still got a decent chance - your extracurriculars are very strong. HOWEVER, GPA and test scores are what make or break an application’s chances, and your GPA and scores are well below par for Cornell. Those alone may be what kill you - grades/scores come before extracurriculars. Since HumEc isn’t especially score-oriented (although you still need decent scores, and I’m sure that they care a great deal about grades foremost), you’ve still got a chance, but I wouldn’t bet on you. Rock those essays, man; they may be the final grains of sand that tip the scale one way or the other.

I’ve received my September ACT score. I scored a 31 on my ACT. So I’m going to send in my ACT instead of SAT.

How does my ACT score change my standing within the applicant pool?

*Bump Bump :)

are you a citizen? if not, financial aid for international students is very limited - you will need to make sure that you can finance your education with outside grants, scholarships etc.

Are permanent residents considered international?

Are you sure you wish to list all of those ECs? (oh and… I don’t think there is enough space on the application.)

No, I’m on H-4 visa, so I’m considered as international student but I’ll still have the same chance as students in U.S. (Phew!) because I’ve been to middle school and high school.

Shifu Yoda, I’m only listing around 7 ECs

 1. Independent Research
 2. USA Swimmer
 3. LSA Figure Skater
 4. Mu Alpha Theta
 5. B.A.R.C
 6. Math Team
 7. Science Fair

Silverzc413, permanent residents with green card are not international students anymore. They can apply for financial aid.

I think you have good shot. Up your GPA.

Yeah, I was really proud of my application after I had finished it, but the GPA really bugged my eyes. I hope they’ll overlook it since my curriculum is challenging and my test score is good.

Where abouts in Kentucky are you from? If you are outside the Cincy metro area, that would definitely add some spice to your application.

I would not submit your SATs.

I’m from Louisville, Kentucky. I believe it’s the largest city of Kentucky (funny how the capital, Frankfort, is ignored by many).

Since Louisville is the big guy of Kentucky, wouldn’t that reduce my chance though? Because more people are likely to apply.

CayugaRed2005, I’m sending in my 31 ACT instead. But I guess they’ll see my SAT Reasoning when I send in my Subjects :(

Cool. My general impression is that Louisville is generally off the radar of my schools on the Eastern Seaboard. At Cornell, most of the kids from Kentucky were from the Cincy metro. So I think Louisville is a plus.

Are you a fan of My Morning Jacket? Great band.

I think my location, the capital region of NY state, will be utterly trite in the eyes of HumEc admissions.
I’m working on my app right now actually, and will apply to HumEc ED as soon as I finish revising this personal statement!!! rips hair out

I have heard of the My Morning Jacket, but not very familiar with it.

Anyway, how competitive is Human Ecology anyway?
