Senior Citizen Playgrounds

We have playgrounds for kids, dog parks for dogs - now senior playgrounds!

What do you think? Can you see yourself spending time playing around? Your parents or siblings???

This one in Cleveland has this fun “elliptical like” piece of equipment:

How would this fly in your community???

I would love this! My community would never want to pay for it though - it took years and private fundraising to develop a playground locally that would serve disabled children. This is a wonderful idea - can’t say I can see my mother or her friends using it, but I’m getting pretty close to senior status and would totally use it!

I think it would be interesting. Like kids, seniors come in various levels of fitness interest and capabilities. I was the kid who would swing and slide but could NEVER do the monkey bars. My brother? He would invent new ways to do everything and anything to keep things challenging!

Seniors might be the same way. One 65 year old person skills could be completely different than another persons. This could be a free, fresh air option to the gym for some.

Nice idea!

The only thing that looks “fun” to me, is that merry-go-round looking thing in the first link.

I wish more parks had pedal boats, but they are probably worried about liability.

Do you remember the parcourse (sp??) phase when stations for exercising were put into many parks? They very under-utilized. Not sure these would get any more use.

The senior citizen playground is called the gym, the park, the golf course, tennis court, etc.

I love the idea. I think that placement is paramount to the amount of use. I see a higher use in city areas in existing parks. Placement near senior housing is a possibility too. Many affluent communities have active senior centers or programs with park and rec. departments and such parks may not see the usage to make it worth the expenditure.

They need to call it something other than “playground” which sounds vaguely insulting (imo) to seniors. “Outside exercise circuit” is probably more appropriate.

All good thoughts!

Interesting concept! Love MOfD suggestion.

To make a real difference in a senior’s physical fitness, though, it would have to be in a temperate climate. Can’t see it being used more than 3-4 months of the year in New England or the snow belt.

Real estate is pretty pricey in HI. We had to fight for over a decade to get a kid’s playground in our community. No idea how many decades for more stuff to be built. We do live next to a JR high and could repurpose some of the stuff set out for the teens, I suppose.

They have summer camps for adults that are pretty cool too.

We might have some of this equipment in our neighborhood. There are a couple of pieces of adult-looking equipment in the same little park that has the kid equipment. I thought it was weird, but I gues it was targeted at adults. That makes more sense. I learned something new. Thanks

This is awesome! I have the body of a senior citizen, can I join in?

The headline is a bit misleading. They’re multigenerational playgrounds… which I think is an even more fantastic idea. Not all of us have grandparents growing up and this can be a way (maybe) of still being able to interact with grandparent-like figures.
