Senior Citizen Tax Exemption?

Does anyone have any experience with obtaining a reduction in property taxes when the homeowner turns 65? Is this something that towns evaluate on a case by case basis or is it “set in stone” and if you’re 65 and meet the income limits, you can count on the reduction?

We asked our town’s tax assessor and they said it was pretty straightforward, but I wonder if this is something they quietly stop doing when they need money…

My county does it. It has been in place for a long time, but it is only for seniors that meet certain income requirements. It would be bery unpopular politically to eliminate it, and (in my area) the houses would be assessed for a low value anyway. I can see this being a political nightmare if the seniors were all still wealthy and living in Mcmansions.
