I know we’re behind but I have to make an appointment to get my D’s senior pictures taken. Everyplace around here has the appointments set up with so many clothing changes. What do girls wear for their senior pictures? My D is a 3 tank tops and a ripped pair of jeans kind of girl. She listed her bottom options today other than jeans, a brown skirt above the knees, a yellow and brown printed skirt, black pants, black skirt (concert skirt), denim and kahki mini skirts. I think that I may have to purchase a few tops to go with her tank tops but I don’t know what. She doesn’t like to shop and shopping for things other than jeans is torture.

Also I want a picture of her with her flute. Any suggestions of what she could wear with her intrument. Thanks

We found that the only pictures we wanted, in the end, were the ones that were from the chest up (face shots). The other shots- sitting on steps, standing beside a tree/wall- were so far away (to get the whole body) that you couldn’t see the face so well. So, looking back on it, it didn’t really matter what my sons were wearing for pants (they both wore jeans and a casual shirt).

Our photographer did the dressy photo set (tux for guys, drape for girls) and then a street clothes set. Since we knew we were going to already have “formal” pictures, we wanted something casual for the other shots- something more indicative of the way our sons really looked like at this stage in their lives, including the style of dress.

Stay away from busy prints. Solid colors that complement your daughter’s natural coloring are best. Also have her bring clothes she ACTUALLY WEARS. You want a picture to remember her as she really is now.

Casual pictures are “in”. My son’s graduating class of 2007 had about 350 kids; the yearbook only had 2 wearing shirts/ties/jackets. The best pictures were relaxed and casual, but not sloppy.

A picture with the flute is a great idea; my son’s friend had his trombone in his picture, there were also kids holding footballs, field hockey sticks, etc. Perhaps the flute picture should include whatever she normally wears for concerts (black top, white top, etc)? Or maybe just something slightly dressier than the rest of her casual poses.

Other than the formals both my boys wore jeans and a long sleeved collared button front casual shirt (untucked) with the cuffs of the sleeves rolled back or a knit shirt. It gave a nice but casual look. These turned out to be their best shots and the ones I bought.

I have seen some girls pics. wearing jeans (no holes) with casual shirts (usually layered) that looked nice. Saw one with a long tiered skirt (that gauzy kind) and a ribbed black tank top with a cute necklace that turned out really pretty. Stay away from big earrings and chunky necklaces. Simple is better so the eye is drawn to her face and not her accessories. Saw one girls pic. with the big swimsuit tan lines showing on shoulders. Didn’t look good. You immediately noticed the tan lines instead of her pretty smile. My neice went to the tanning bed before her pictures and looked like she had been roasted. Not a good idea!

Be careful with mini skirts as many of the casual poses are sitting positions that could make the mini too mini! Do the sit test at home and see if you like how it looks for a pic.

As for the flute, wear something that the flute would really show up well against, most likely a dark color. I think the flute would probably look nicest against a black top if that is something that your d looks good in or would like.
Any other dark color would be fine though.

Don’t forget that even though it’s summer, some of her favorite outfits may be in her winter wardrobe. By all means use them. My S1’s favorite shirt was a charcoal gray long sleeve thermal from Old Navy. He wore it all the time. It was sort of his signature shirt. So even though his pics were taken in May and he was burning up, he wore it in some of the casual shots and it looked great. Both boys also wore Rainbow flip flops because that is what they live in and I wanted the pics to look like them, not a mannequin.

For the flute I’d ask her to wear what she has to wear when she plays it. (Presumably she has an orchestra/band outfit?) Otherwise I think casual really is okay. If pictures show the legs I don’t think miniskirts flatter anyone (and I was skinny in the miniskirt days.)

First off, unless she’s graduated already, you aren’t behind. We didn’t do this until February because D was just too busy over the summer and in the fall.
At her school, band is very popular and they wear their band letter jackets quite a bit, so she posed (in ripped jeans lol) in that with her various instruments around her.
Black pants are good for the “bottoms” of dressier shots. I agree that the best ones will probably be “waist up”. I wouldn’t worry about a skirt unless she has one she loves.
One caution about tank tops - if your arms are hanging close to your body, the tops of your arms will look wider than they really are. My D is skinny skinny but her arms looked fat in the shots in sleeveless tops. Yeah, the dressy ones I insisted on buying and then she’s never worn again… The poses that turned out best were in a lightweight navy sweater with a slight v neck. Took the focus off the clothes and onto her.
Small stud or hoop earings.

We just did a senior photo (3 months after graduation). They were so good I cryed. Black and white photo, “head shot”, black t-shirt, dark background in photo studio. His face, smile, eyes just jumped off the print into your heart. With the wonders of digital photos these days I think any photographer could do one like that. The black and white shots were much superior to the color shots.

Thanks everyone. She doesn’t have a band letter jacket so that won’t work. She did have a very pretty light ivory sweater that she wore with her black skirt for concerts, I’ll have her root through her room for that, thanks. She’s a red head and looks great in ivory.

You would think that I would have an idea of what to wear, I’ve been through this before with my S. He had slightly more enthusiam for senior pictures than a root canal! LOL! I just bouight new polo’s and a new shirt (because his usual wardrobe is running t-shirts and cargo shorts) and he was good to go. I did look at his pictures and they are all shots from the waist up.

dragonmom, I love the idea of a lightweight plain sweater. I hope I can find something like that in a color that is flattering to her. Thanks for the advice about sleeveless tops, although it is hard to imagine her looking anything but tiny. And I’ll stay away from the mini-skirt, I think that it makes her legs look a million miles long and skinny. I’d rather go for pants and jeans.

Now to look at the yearbook and see what the girls wore. The boy was easy, he just needed a jacket and tie.

Thanks skiers-mom, I love the idea of a black and white photo. I’ll be sure to talk to the photographer about that.

my senior pictures will be in my cap in gown thats what my school does they get the cap and gowns out September 21st on picture day and they take the pictures in our cap and gowns…

My girlfriend eschewed the photography studio for her son (except the mandatory yearbook tux photo, which she didn’t pay for), and had a professional photographer take a whole bunch of pics on the beach. They came out soooooo great! And actually cost less than the photo package presented by the school-contracted photography studio. He wore jeans, a collared shirt and a jacket in some, then just the jeans and shirt for the rest. It fit him so well, because he is/was a surfer/lifeguard.
