Right now im a junior in High school and we are starting to do registration. My senior year schedule is as follows:
AP Gov/Econ
AP Calc AB
AP Music Theory
AP Lit
AP Comp Sci or AP Environmental

now i need a sixth class and im stuck between another math related class or doing first year of chorus. This sixth class will be my free elective class and i narrowed it down to about three classes:Math of finance, first year of chorus, or Music Technology 3rd year

What will colleges prefer? Im thinking as a music major im gonna need a fine arts class besides the two years of music tech and middle school orchestra…

Any ideas on what i should take
Registration is coming up and i dont want to be put on the waiting list for a class

Please Help
Thanks!!

P.S. my intended major in music is music technology…maybe that will factor into my classes i take.

Your school offers a lot more courses than I am used to!

Have you taken any computer science? Do you need a 4th year of science, like environmental science? You don’t mention that choice, but that also looks difficult. Have you taken bio, chem and physics already?

As for the other choice, even if you were not thinking of a music major, I would recommend chorus or music technology versus math of finance. You already have calculus, which is fine for senior year. What is third year music technology? Will that be helpful as you look ahead, or will it make first year of college boring? Can you compare it with a course description for a college course in that major? Are you a person who gets bored easily, or do you like the feeling of mastery so you would feel safer starting college with material you are familiar with?

Chorus is great. Bottom line: if you enjoy singing and you want a class that is fun and satisfying, that enhances your well-being in the difficult last year, take that.

If music technology is a “passion,” then enjoy that instead. Only you know what will give you the best experience. Don’t worry too much about what college want to see: chances are you have already satisfied that.

Thanks for the reply. Im leaning more towards the chorus class because music technology is just self-study which students make a self composd album for the semester. There isnt any no material to be taught in that class

We do need a 4th science to graduate so im thinkig comp sci since it goes along with my intended major a bit more than environmental

I honestly don’t think that it matters that much. Many colleges will make their acceptance decisions solely based on your transcript through the Jr. year.

You may need that album, or something similar as part of your application package for Music Technology programs. Have a look at the application requirements at the schools you are considering. Otherwise, chorus might be good. My son’s ear-training class (at Hartt) requires sight singing.

oh im already working in the album seperately outside of class. Most music technology majors require applicants to submit a portfolio of a.least 2-3compositions…so i dont think that will be a problem~~

^Just my .02 – make sure you take compsci, especially if c+ is involved over enviro. Also, if advanced Calc (eg. II - III) isn’t available, why not go ahead and take MusicTech3 to get good feedback and extra time on your portfolio material.

Might as well get credit for the work!

Also, as you likely know, SOME applications (eg. University of Michigan, for example) have very specific portfolio requirements that include sampling, an electronic instrumentation of a Bach fugue, and a stereo multi-instrument capture and mix. They also like to see samples of programming if you have same. So depending on where you intend to apply, I suspect the MusicTech extra time would not be wasted.

Go for chorus - it will be much more useful to you as a musician! Music schools will not care if you have the extra math and universities will most likely accept you academically anyway, given your other coursework.

so basicaly what everyone has posted is that taking chorus or.music technology third year will not affect my admission chances as much and to just take the class that i would enjoy more?

The APs are great for getting some required academics out of the way but be aware that many music schools and conservatories do not give credit for AP Music Theory. You can test for a more advanced placement when you get there, but the places my kid has auditioned at have made a point of explaining this policy.

This may be true for performance majors, but is definitely not true at all for some of the top music technology programs, especially if said program offers a music engineering degree. At Umich, for example, even the multi-media music tech stream students (BFA, not a BS) have to take first year engineering/or EECS and will absolutely benefit from advanced calc to handle the problem sets.
In this same program, the absolute bottom end of the math cut-off in terms of ACT score is 28 and the majority of the students are in the 30s.

So, I will say again, WHERE the poster hopes to go will to some degree make a difference on what classes are in his or her best interest to take.
