That’ll be her problem. But I’ll show her
YES THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING. It was the 90s or whatever and she was a woman in architecture. It doesn’t help a lot of her friends have kids that are getting into these schools though
To the public U thing she doesn’t view them as real colleges for the majority. Like she said Rutgers is a hard no, because she hates some people who go there. Same with Montclair state
I don’t read text-speak very well. What is NGL?
First of all, my kids got into some great schools and they had shortened schedules in senior year because they “ran out” of courses for their levels. (Taken all of the APs and advanced classes that they could).
They had internships in biotech, sports tournaments, jobs, or classes at the local CC that they had to get to. Many of their classmates also left campus to do the same. Each college will look at your coursework and determine your rigor and your activities. You do what you have to do.
More often we have the opposite situation, where the parent is trying to sell the good schools with a lower price tag, and the teenager is the one who’s like, “Ew, people I don’t like go to Rutgers!” But this happens too!
Maybe you can find some publics you like that are a little outside of Mom’s “familiarity breeds contempt” zone. The SUNY’s are pretty affordable for NJ kids, for example, and Binghamton and Geneseo, for example, have a fairly private-college-esque vibe. A bit farther away, UVM might appeal. UDelaware is another nice flagship with a private-like feel, and great honors programs. Miami of Ohio loves to sell its “public ivy” image, and gives great merit.
Anyway, it sounds as if you wouldn’t be devastated if scaling back your senior schedule ended up keeping you out of NYU, so… go for the work-life balance, do what you love, and let the colleges that fit be the ones to accept you!
Be aware that most selective private colleges that you may be thinking of (top 50) are in the same price range as NYU. It’s not just her problem if you get in but it’s unaffordable. Let’s say you apply to UC Berkeley or U Michigan, which are also in the top 50, you will almost certainly pay the full price as an out of state student—at least $73,000 a year.
The two most important factors at this stage:
- Know how college will be paid for.
- Compile a realistic list of safeties, matches and reaches, based on your stats, desires, and interests.
Oh I’m sorry I keep forgetting to speak things out. Not going to lie is ngl. Omg your kids are so accomplished congrats.
If it were up to me I’d go to Montclair state or smth and Howard as a reach but I don’t Know. I think I’m just going to try and ignore her and apply to wherever. I don’t know if she’ll still support me if I do thay though. this process is stressinf me out
It’s great that you are here asking questions! Maybe encourage your mom to sign up for her own account and she can take a look at some of the threads for the schools she thinks you should apply to - that might help you in your conversations with her so she can either adjust her expectations or just learn more about what the college admissions landscape looks like now.
She went to school in NY so she’s familiar with SUNY. If it doesn’t have a low acceptance rate attatched I doubt she’ll care.
I’ll look into UDelaware as I know they have a medical theatre thing and UVM
LOL I feel like that’d make it worse. She doesn’t know about CC and I plan to keep it that way. I doubt there’s anything I can do becuase she’s seen so many other people get into these schools
How does Mom feel about HBCU’s? No lack of prestige at Howard! And if you’re open to women’s colleges, how about Spelman? Point out to Mom that Spelman has domestic exchange programs with some of the top PWI’s in the country: Domestic Exchange | Spelman College
She knows Howard because of Kamala? I think so she’s fine with it. Spelman I have to talk her into like I did with Barnard becuase she thinks it’ll turn me lesbian or wtv
In our district, we encourage those with the heaviest AP loads to take a free period. In fact, you don’t qualify for a free period unless you have an acceptable GPA and a rigorous (at least 2 APs) schedule. This is to ensure they have enough time to do well in their AP classes, stay on top of their applications, and protect their mental health. Too many seniors were giving up sleep to stay on top of their course load.
It can be stressful, but it can be manageable too, especially if you make a realistic list based on your stats. Realistic means the schools are affordable and you have a shot at getting in. A common saying here on CC is that your safe school is the most important school on the list. Everything beyond that is icing on the cake.
See your guidance counselor at school. Your mom should be able to attend the session. Ask us here on CC for help too. The people here generally know what they are talking about.
I scheduled a college talk with my counselor. Hopefully she can talk realistically to my mom. If my mom doesn’t understand now, she’ll understand next April
WRT scheduling: take Late Arrival - American teens are often sleep-deprived and that contributes to their stress levels (and yours is very high).
Hopefully you can take Love&Literature, it sounds like an interesting Senior English Seminar and it can replace AP Lit (up to you); AP Bio, Calc BC, AP French (you speak French already you said, so it should be a fun class and an easy A); Ceramics 2 is an art class and great to have for your creativity and dexterity (actually required for some colleges) but Sports, by which I assume competitive athletics, can be a good stress reliever + is respected by colleges.
Honors Anatomy is useful for Nursing. If you take it, don’t take AP Lit and only take the English Senior Seminar.
You need a social science class: does your school offer Sociology? Or US Gov (should be interesting in an election year!)
You DO NOT need APs in every subject.
Med Term, Med Intervention, and Investing sound like “Career” ie., non college prep classes. Drop them and don’t worry about it. Med Term will NOT help with being premed - premed classes are not “medical”, they’re just regular classes: you take General Bio with Bio majors and you have to do better than 80% of them, you take General Chem with Chem majors and have to do better than 80% of them, etc. As a result, HS classes like “medical terminology” are not useful to premeds and tend to count for students planning to go to Community College for health professions (CNA, LPN…)
To summarize
Late Arrival
English: Senior Seminar Love&Literature and/or AP lit (Senior seminar preferred)
Math: Calc BC
Science: AP Bio
Social Science: ? <— MISSING (Sociology? Or if you can take DE women’s studies?)
World Language: AP French (heritage speaker)
Personal picks: Honors Anatomy, Ceramics 2
Athletics
Basically it’s an almost perfect schedule, well-balanced for senior year.
I think that was before they started to guarantee to meet full need…which I’m pretty sure they do (as they calculate it to be).
Still, you would need to demonstrate that you have financial need and it’s not clear that this poster has that.
My understanding is that it’s still pretty poor as far as FA goes.
I genuinely hate French class and the people in it. I will go mad.
I took seminar but I’m not sure if I should take research. That’d also conflict with AP bio unless I took that at rcsj
I think I’ll double in English becuase I’m good at it and why not. Lit is also loads easier than lang in our school which I believe is not the norm:
AP Bio and Honors Anatomy can fit together for a 3 period period block, some students dont do that though. There’s regular anatomy but i probably wouldn’t take that. AP bio and honors anatomy have historically conflicted with Calc BC and AP Research
(I can try and take AP research independently worst comes to worse) I’m not crazy about AP research but the person whose teaching it next year is amazing
The people taking Gov genuinely irk me but I don’t mind the teacher. From what I heard it’s an easy A but mind numbing at some points. I might throw it on there if it fits. I’ll talk to my counselor when I reschedule
I understand I don’t need APs in every subject. I just genuinely am not interested in anything else. That’s why I was thinking abt senior option paired with college
I can look for niche classes in my handbook in a few. Do I need to take sociology if I’ve gotten an A in college psych?
Medical Terminlogy, I took at college. My school just added medical interventions to my academy so I’m trying to drop that
I’m going to copy down the schedule you provided and bring it up to my counselor when I meet with her again.
Oh and Investing was for DECA
Thank you so much
