So is the full aid no loans thing a scam? I see a lot of colleges advertise that
Not a scam. BUT most of these are highly competitive colleges for admissions…really reaches for all. If you get accepted, and have financial need, these schools will not package loans in your financial aid package.
But when I read your posts, it doesn’t look like you have financial need. Do you?
From what my mom has said I don’t think so. If any it’d probably be very little.
Your parents can run the net price calculators on each school’s site to understand if you will qualify for any need based aid. It’s not clear to me if your parents are living together though, which can make NPCs inaccurate. Some NPCs are more accurate than others, NYU’s is one that isn’t.
I mean they tech do but I think for tax reasons they don’t. I don’t know how to ask that to confirm though.
The NPCs will ask questions about how they file taxes. Definitely save the NPC results either by connecting it to your CollegeBoard account or by taking screenshots. Schools that require CSS Profile for need based aid will require all the financials from both parents…and the NPCs will ask for that. The vast majority of meet full need schools require CSS Profile.
Add me to the list of posters saying that it would be so helpful for your mom to create an account here. Posters can show her how college admissions are different today, help with financial aid/cost questions, etc.
Okay, when the times right I’ll bring it up to my mom. Thank you for this information.
Please keep this in mind (since you mentioned multiple real estate ownerships).
NPCs are more complicated when a family has investment properties, self-employed, etc. The equity in those properties is considered an asset. And if they are rentals, the rents are considered income.
Maybe start a thread in the financial aid area here asking about what contributes to calculating the family contribution at colleges.
This is off topic for this thread.
When I gather more info, I will do so. Thank you for this.
No need to take AP French - I figured it’d be an easy class but if you hate it, no problem. What you CAN do is take a community-based (noncredit) class in Haitian Creole in the Spring/over the summer: it’s relatively easy if you know French and there’s a dearth of Creole speakers in various institutions, so you could volunteer during the year, helping families navigate the hospital, helping at the front desk, entertaining kids in the pediatrician’s wing waiting room (you wouldn’t be allowed to do anything medical as a HS student but knowing someone speaks your language can make a lot of difference for parents who are stressed out or in pain.) With language skills, you can also volunteer in schools (tutoring ESL elementary/MS kids), at the library, etc. And it’s a way to use what you know.
Sociology: it’s a required course for premed. It’s usually an easy class in HS and it can come in handy to know the basics before you take the college course. However it’s not necessary to have a HS-level course in sociology to take Freshman Sociology.
If you love DECA and “Investing” is part of that, go for it ![]()
So, updated optimal schedule

if you worry about how your mother would react, say you only read the forums but don’t have an account; remove any identifying information from your OP’s (the posts at the top of the thread); Direct her to the Parents’ thread first.
Some sort of government / civics course is a typical requirement in US high schools (AP US government being the honors version where it is offered). But it may have been taken before 12th grade by some students.
My Friend natively speaks Creole. I’ll look for opportunities at the neighboring CC. I’ll look for that and Yoruba (my language I can’t speak it well though). She’ll probably know more abt creole opportunities than I would though
My CC has African American history and history of western civilizations, I’d probably only take the former but I have yet to see if it’s being offered online. It’ll probs conflict. I could also try and take it over the summer and it’ll be on my senior year transcript i think? I’m not sure. I know I’m submitting both my hs and my college transcript to colleges
I don’t know if it’ll count the same but they have social minorités and ethnic group relations/social problems, I could also just take sociology there
I think I might take like a psych class or something chill a semester too. I like the professor and I don’t mind the subject. I’ll know moreso when I get there and I see how my schedule fits together, if it does. Then; I’ll revaluate. Hopefully bio and anatomy don’t conflict this year with math becuase there’s some people in my academy taking it too
Tysm for your help.
My school has two years of US history and one of world.
I dropped intro to law first week of school because I had a mental breakdown (personal, not difficulty)
Is not taking gov at all a bad idea
