Oh and unlike some schools it would be super unusual to take more than 4 years to graduate here unless you triple major or switch aroud too much. Many finish a half year early because of AP classes. There is a 5yr Ecomonics program where you can get a Masters Degree in ECON.

Pebbles,
Graduating in 4 yrs should NOT be an issue. The advisors work closely with students to assure this timing. My s is finishing his Soph. year and is on track to graduating early becase he brought in AP credits equal to a full BU semester and also attended a six wk BU summer abroad program last year. Some kids stick to 4 yrs regardless of AP credit and use the AP credits to give them a couple of semesters where they only have to take 3 courses. Since he is now saying he wishes to attend Law School we hope he will decide to end the half yr earlier to save money although at this point he wants to have his full senior year there.

Current parents/students–have any of you/your kids done the semester abroad program? If so, in which semester of which year and where? Anyone have experience with the newer Switzerland program?

I know that the BU School of Communication is excellent…right now, I am kind of debating between whether I should attend the School of Management or the COM. Could I take classes in both? I am not sure what I want to major in; I am debating between Economics/International Relations/Business/Journalism.

It would be hard to take classes in both SMG and COM, since most are limited to majors only or have prereqs that are limited to majors only. I think you should be able to decide between business and journalism relatively quickly, however.

Taking econ or IR classes shouldn’t be a problem since those are in CAS.

How hard is it to get in the school of SMG???

I have a question about SMG and CGS. If I was to be accepted into CGS and went, would I be ready if I transferred into SMG after the 2nd semester, or would I be behind and have to take the freshman and sophmore level classes?

You have to spend two years in CGS–you can’t tranfer to another school before then.

I believe that you take SM299–the version of the introductory SMG course for transfers–and financial accounting during your last semester in CGS or the summer after you finish. I believe that CGS has a plan set up so that you can graduate in four years if you take classes during one summer. You should contacts CGS–they’ll be glad to advise you on these things.

Oh I know that I didn’t read what I wrote.

HOW hard is it to get in SMG???

If you’re in SMG and you took AP Calc, do you have to take MA 120?

If you have credit from the AP Calc exam, then you shouldn’t have to (http://www.bu.edu/admissions/pdfs/advanced_credit_guide.pdf). Did you get your scores?

HOW hard is it to get in SMG???

I have a question about WR100. In WR100, are we tested on the books that we have to read or is it mostly just writing short papers and research papers?

It may vary from professor to professor, but, from what I remember, your grade is only based on papers, a presentation and participation. I’ve never been tested on story details (and can’t imagine any professor doing so), but participation is a big thing, so you do have to keep up with the reading.

ryanbis- i understand that most people going for th bsba in SMG do not choose the international finance concentration. I was wondering if one concentration is more competitive than the other and also if SMG is harder to get into that the other colleges at BU? How much harder?

“ryanbis- i understand that most people going for th bsba in SMG do not choose the international finance concentration. I was wondering if one concentration is more competitive than the other and also if SMG is harder to get into that the other colleges at BU? How much harder?”

I’m not sure what you mean by international finance concentration. There’s an international management concentration and a finance concentration–I’m not aware of anything called international finance.

I’m also not sure what you mean by competitive. If you’re talking in terms of difficulty, I can’t really compare beyond accounting and finance (since those were my two concentrations). I did find that accounting was a bit more challenging that finance. If you’re asking about competitive in terms of job prospects, then accounting and finance tend to be the most desired.

Keep in mind that everyone in SMG gets the same degree and takes the same business courses with the exception of their four electives (which determine their concentration).

As for SMG being harder to get into, generally yes; however, I’m not admissions and I have no idea about what goes into the admission process (especially since things are different today than when I applied years ago), so I don’t like to speculate on admissions-type questions.

I was thinking about transferring to BU in the spring, do you know if its hard to do so? Do you have any idea how the aid/housing is? I would think it’d be crap since everyone already has a dorm and whatnot.

hi! i have a question about dorms. i have just been assigned to myles standish hall and i was just wondering how social it is for freshmen and also, if it was a good dorm for freshmen to live in. i didnt get my first choice, which was warren towers, but hey at least i figure myles has a prive bathroom. Also, im in room 0619 and i was jw on what side of the building my windows will be – on beacon st. side or baystate side. ok thanks!

I’ve never lived in Myles, so I can’t really answer your questions. I wasn’t a huge fan of it due to the location and the dining hall (which I hear isn’t very good). Some people love it, though.

i have a question about the grading at bu. i’m a freshman right now and i’m kinda worried about the grading. do all the classes grade on a curve? and if so, how often do students get a lower grade than they deserve? i guess this kinda goes back to the grade deflation thing. is the grade deflation present in all bu classes?
