Senior year Class selection [foreign language]

Our biggest concern was the lack of classes senior year also! She will have problems fitting it in her after school schedule with her sport and coaching commitments but luckily it seems like they will be very accommodating and let her choose her hours. The internship/ work study was a nice way to be able to be able to do it during the school day to keep her after school open for her coaching / training

I’m not seeing the value of work study for the D here. Her entire life is going to be “work study” after all
I don’t see the upside intellectually if she isn’t super charged about doing it.

She will end up applying to whatever she chooses, mechanical engineering then a masters in biomedical has more flexibility upon graduation then biomedical.

And not to get sidetracked. I was going by the original post, and found this on College Board, so I didn’t know if maybe it would be an offering soon. But I am sure it would have been up on CB if it was happening for Fall 2025.

At any rate, I agree with others that the student should maintain a rigorous schedule.

She mentioned that it was AP but I could have heard incorrectly, it is more than likely honors or just a regular class. I have no idea what other options there are for social science, she seems to have little interest in them, but I will ask her. She likes French it was just that it did not fit her schedule if she did the work study.

By the end of this year she will only have 3 years of French, but the only class offered for a 4th year is AP French. According to her teacher she will do well in the class and be able to also earn the Seal of Biliteracy

But my question is what level of French will she complete? Was freshman year French 1 or French 2? Some HS will place you in 2nd level as a freshman if you took that language in junior high.

So will she finish French 3 as a junior or French 4? Through level 4, even if only 3 years of high school classes, should be adequate anywhere.

Some schools are two. My daughter got into highly selective with two but her school canceled the third and I’m sure it was noted.

There will be both meche ahd bio where she’ll be ok with three.

She is currently in French 3 after this the only option is AP

My S25 guidance counselor shared this around the time of course selection for senior year Foreign Language Requirements for College
Spanish 4 did not fit in his schedule senior year because of conflicts with APs. He originally had planned to not take a language because of an awful experience in regular Spanish 3 (Honors conflicted with his AP), but one of the schools that rose to the top over the summer does technically require 4 years. He was able to get into Latin 1 and although not 4 years in the same language, the AO he reached out to said that will work for them. It was not fun trying to get this all worked out over the summer when no one was around. I would be sure there aren’t schools they would consider that expect 4 years.
Edited to add: it worked out for the best because he prefers Latin, especially after becoming interested in Classics during a sample class at the college’s open house. Things seem to work how they are supposed to.

Thanks for clarifying. Then, it all boils down to what level of schools she will be applying to in the fall. As I’ve mentioned, UIUC recommends 4 years. Are there kids there with only 2 or 3 years? Sure.

It looks like she only has 4 other classes on her schedule next year, including gym class. Doesn’t she have room for both AP French and the AP Anatomy and Physiology class?

I asked an admissions officer at a top LAC nearly this exact question. My son did not want to take AP Spanish and it was the only the option for a 4th year language. The admin officer said that around 60% of their freshmen had 4 years of a foreign language. My S25 took two math classes instead and so far he’s done well with acceptances.

what sort of schools (selectivity level) are they looking at?

For highly selective schools they will want to see 5 courses across the 5 academic areas senior year (in general). If already taking AP Physics, then anatomy doesn’t really matter. They would want to (ideally) see AP French though. Also, do you have a history or social science? That should be 5th course.

Also make sure to have some level of bio, chem, and physics over the 4 years.

They won’t be impressed by “work study” as it isn’t an academic course. Colleges want students.

However, if your kid applying to lesser selectivity schools, this all matters a bit less.

Weslyan’s webpage has a lot of detaisl on incoming classe:
https://www.wesleyan.edu/admission/apply/class-profile.html

" 77% have a fourth year (or equivalent) of one foreign language"

That presumably includes kids for which this isn’t an option, and hooked kids etc.

In the Midwest - you’ve got Akron, Cincy, UIUC, UIC, iowas, K State, Louisville, Miami, UMN, Purdue, RHIT, WVU for biomedical. She’ll have many options with her current language situation without another year. They are all ABET accredited. And in the Midwest.

MechE will have more but the student should study what they desire.

She has room for both French and A&P only if she does not do the work study! She has toggled back and forth about the work study / so I wanted to be prepared our conversation tonight

She was temped to do AP Stats instead of A&P she loves Math if she could take another chemistry she would! French is a pretty fun and chill class that she enjoys so as long as she is not doing the work study she planned on taking it just could not fit it if doing work study

Thanks right now she is not looking at very selective schools, but that could change this summer after she really truly takes a look at colleges. Her # 1 choice is Miami of Ohio because it has her sport.
She did her social science in freshman year to free up her schedule for work study in her senior year. She has Bio Chemistry and Physics taken care of.

Zero issue academically speaking, assuming strong grades, at Miami. And it has both majors with ABET accreditation !!!

Given you are staying in the MW, there are few selective bio engineering schools.

Yes she was happy that Biomedical E was ABET certified at Miami and they accept a lot of her AP’s there
Academically speaking she is solid She has a 4.0 unweighted and 5’s on her AP’s thus far

When all her friends are stressing, assuming you can afford it, she won’t be.

Throw in a K State, WVU, CincyUIC, or UMN as a just in case.

Best of luck.
