Sorry for being MIA for a couple of hours, and yes, I agree.
Hey, I am back… with an update!
On September 18 (two days before the add/drop deadline!) I dropped out of AP Statistics because I overly stressed myself out, to keep it simple. Something else happened, but I would not like to describe it.
My schedule now:
- AP Lit (btw I am literally failing w a 61)
- Introductory Calculus (I have an 80)
- Gym/Physics Lab
- Physics (I have a 70, but I am getting a tutor)
- AP Computer Science A (I have a 73, weighted 77, also getting a tutor)
- Economics (I have a 90, easy class)
- free period! - I normally go to the library or TA in one of my favorite teachers’ Spanish 3 class, but I still get super bored and miss AP Statistics a lot!
- College Spanish 5 (I have a 90, weighted 92.7. The class is literally all presentations…and then some vocab/grammar, but I guess it’s the end of my Spanish career!)
- Resource Room (not graded)
Can you transfer out of AP Lit and into an easier English class? It sounds as if it’s too much for you. Applause for having attempted it, but I think that, combined with your schedule (even after having dropped AP Stats) and considering your speech/language issues which I bet make English class more challenging for you, this is the one in which to drop down. Many schools will allow a drop down a level without it being reflected on the transcript.
Have you thought about where you want to go to college? Lots of SUNYs have the majors that you are interested in. You’d be able to get into one, get the degree that you want, and the career that you want. You don’t have to have a 4.0 and a 1600 in order to get that - you just aren’t going to be going to MIT for it.
Hey! I tried when I met with my GC & school social worker (SW) but my whole schedule risks being rearranged.
(I can drop AP Lit and go into English 12 - level changes are due in November., but I have a floating Resource Room and I can’t fit it in anywhere else…)
Resource Room is a requirement and I can’t really remove it either, so,
those learning disabled perks for me are pretty…annoying…sometimes.
How much does resource room help you, at this point? Would it be reasonable to drop it? There have to be a lot of regular sections of English that you could sub into the same period as your current AP Lit.
I…can’t drop. It’s the only other period I can get my special education services.
My case manager last year [who isn’t my current CM] brought it up at my CSE and everyone was on board, including me, with the idea.
(I took Resource Room 9th & 10th and had Academic Class Support last year only because I had jam-packed my schedule last year and had no way to fit it in!)**
If I did, it’s definitely not worth having a CSE Meeting over changing a single support class. There is, in fact, an English 12 (non-Regents) course period 1 but my friend is in there and says it’s at capacity.
When I met with my GC & SW they tried to fix the master schedule but a lot of my classes would risk rearranging and I would have to possibly remove AP CSA.
Here was a possibility, but it doesn’t work for many reasons:
[off period 1]
Physics 2nd/3rd (A)
Gym (3rd/B)
Introductory Calculus 4th
AP CSA 5th
Economics 6th
[off period 7]
College Spanish 5 8th
English 12 9th
*As much as it seems like it would work, Resource Room is absolutely required and it’s not offered period 1 or 7, and my schedule would collapse if I put it anywhere else.
[TL;DR] I officially have no choice BUT to keep AP Lit.
It’s the only way my schedule can work.
** My schedule last year:
period 1: Algebra 2
period 2: College Spanish 4
period 3: AP Computer Science Principles
period 4: English 11
period 5: lunch/health
period 6: US History
period 7: Chemistry
period 8: Chemistry Lab (A-day); Academic Class Support (B-day)
period 9: gym (A-day); Algebra 2 support (B-day)
As of right now, I will be dropping AP Lit during a discussion w/my GC tomorrow.
Just thought I should provide an update #2.
Update #3:
AP Lit has disappeared!
My schedule was rearranged.
Period 1: senior privilege
Period 2: English 12
Period 3: Resource Room 11-12
Period 4: College Spanish 5
Period 5: AP Computer Science A
Period 6: Economics (next sem it’ll still be Participation in Government)
Period 7: Physics
Period 8 (A-day): Gym 11-12
Period 8 (B-day): Physics Lab
Period 9: Introductory Calculus
I do however have a floating Speech/Language consult but I can get that hopefully during period 1 OR 3.
That looks perfect Good job advocating for yourself and figuring out the right schedule.
Thank you :^)
How’s College Application Season going?
It’s…alright, to say the least. I’m glad that I don’t have AP Lit anymore so my course load will be significantly easier and I can put more time and energy towards that.
Next week I have a zoom meeting with the director of Disability Access Services at a university and I’m a little nervous but it’s okay, I guess.
But outside of that- I’m applying to 13 schools and yeah.
For the intw: Prepare 5 questions, including some about student experience, and things that cannot be found reading the website.
Run the NPC on every college you’re applying to.
When you say “student experience”…student experience for students w/disabilities or without or both?
BTW do you want me to put the NPC results on here?
Both
We don’t need the results unless you want to share them.
However it’s very important for you to know what your parents’ budget is then to make sure your colleges are within budget.
If your parents say “25k budget”, whether your net price is 18k or 24k you’re good to go.
But if your net prices are in the 30-40k range your list needs work and we can help you find colleges similar to those you like, just cheaper.
Alright; I’m in school right now, but I can try & run the NPC when school ends.
Also sorry, as another update, when I wrote this post I did not have my August SAT score.
Unless you have read my terrible Chance Me/Match Me post that flopped or saw my response to @/Zenfi on SAT-accommodations then you know what I got.
I got a 1310 (660 RW, 650 M) and I did not take it in October - it was my original plan, but got ruined by schedule stressors.
There are plenty of colleges where you will be a welcome addition with that SAT score.
Yeah, but my GPA is kinda low (it is a 86.9 weighted*, my school does not scale) and my course rigor has completely disappeared.
*my school only wants us reporting our weighted GPAs.
I have taken 2 APs (AP CSP & CSA), 2 Honors (Spanish 2+3), and 2 College Courses (Spanish 4+5), and I do not know if colleges will like that.
I mean I did double up on Math courses junior and senior year, so maybe that will be rigorous? I do not really know, and it is freaking me out…
I must be missing something in your query. Where exactly are you applying to college? Like I said, there are plenty of colleges where you will be welcome…but they might not be HYPSM types of schools.
