I am not applying to HYPSM schools…too academically rigorous and will definitely stress me out on day 1.
My current lineup (keeps changing)
CUNY Baruch College (RD)
CUNY Hunter College (RD)
Clemson (OOS) (RD)
Marist (because they both [both meaning Clemson & Marist] have Learning Support Programs, and I have to get retested to transfer my IEP → 504) (EA)
NYU (RD)
NC State (OOS) (EA)
Northeastern (OOS) (ED1)
RIT (RD)
SUNY Binghamton (EA)
SUNY Stony Brook University (EA)
SUNY University at Buffalo (EA)
The George Washington University (RD)
Wellesley College (RD)
It doesn’t matter if you are OOS for wellesley or George Washington , they are private colleges.
What school is your sure thing for admission and affordability? Some of the colleges on your list are very pricey and don’t guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. Just make sure your parents are on board with paying your net costs! And if they are, give them a BIG hug.
Okay, I don’t know the answer to your question ~exactly~ but my parents support & I think can almost fully commit to wherever I go!
But I will be running the NPC w/them tonight + will post the results
BTW 9/13 schools I’m applying to are free.
I also have very little OOS schools because I like New York :]]
Yes! ~ They are VERY expensive…heh.
I may get into one of NYU’s Opportunity Programs, can’t really speak on it because I’m in a certain program.
I’m hoping that the NPC results come out decently good.
& yes, SUNY schools are my current favorites.
Ah, I’d forgotten about the NYU HEOPs etc - I don’t think we could possibly have enough information here to chance you on that but it’s definitely worth an application. Good luck!
For most colleges on your list, rigor = 4 years of English Honors/AP, 4 years of history/social science including honors and AP, Math through precalculus/statistics, foreign language through level 4, bio/chem/physics or 2 other science classes, 1 art.
=> While your rigor isn’t sufficient for Columbia/Barnard, it’s definitely rigorous enough for Marist, SUNYs, etc
In fact you should apply to Baruch Honors - lots of excellent opportunities and sometimes it helps in bypassing some redtape.
Same thing, apply to Honors at SUNY Albany (closest to Baruch in offerings and vibe I think.) and SUNY New Paltz would be close enough to NYC (another place where you can apply to Honors and see )
If NYU HEOP, would you have to commute?
What about Fordham? St Lawrence? Ithaca? Hobart&William Smith?
Use HEOP wherever you can
If you like Northeastern’s co-op system, look into Drexel (match) and uCincinnati (apply as soon as you can for best scholarship opportunities.)
If you like NC, your odds of merit are better at UNC Charlotte than at NCSU.
Good luck on those NPCs.
Here lemme make a list of my rigor, unless if what you’re providing is an example:
~ English (all 4 years normal)
~ Math (all 4 years normal, doubled up Junior & Senior Year. My school calls CS Math. AP CSP & Algebra 2 [11th] and AP CSA & Introductory Calculus [12th])
~ Science (all 4 years normal. earth science->living environment->chemistry->physics)
~ Social Studies (all 4 years normal, Global I & II, USHG, Gov/Eco)
~ Foreign Language (all Honors/Advanced - Spanish 2H/3H, College Spanish 4/5)
~ Electives (Studio Art 1, Theater Arts I, AP CSP/CSA [though these aren’t electives])
~ Support Classes (Resource Room 3x, ACS 1x)
I will take a look at these other schools and come back to you. May even calculate them into the NPC.
HEOP: Yes, I would have to commute to NYU, I live in Long Island (this may be redacted, eeeek), but it’s like 75-90 minute commute so it’s not horrible. (BTW I only qualify for NYU CSTEP!)
But yeah ~ thank you SO SO MUCH for all that insight, I take it all to heart.
NYU, Wellesley, Northeastern, GWU would expect almost all Honors and about 8APs, Bing would want more Honors but it’ll depend on EOP.
Probably iffy for Clemson and NCSU unless you apply as a Spanish major.
You have a decent shot
If you like Wellesley, look into Agnès Scott (match) and St Kate’s in Saint Paul (likely).
Do you think nyu is significantly stronger on rigor than 5 years ago? My D19 got in with I think 4 APs (maybe 5 but definitely not more) and a couple of honors courses.
Do they also not look at candidates for the opportunities programs a little differently?
Well~ my school offers 22 APs + people self-study the ones we don’t offer and take them in our school…I’m going to look kinda…academically weak…in comparison to my graduating class…
Yeah, they do look at people in OPs differently, as we (the portion of people applying to OPs) are inadmissible to regular NYU admissions and can ONLY apply to the OP during RD.
Spanish major…heh… That’s a long shot! I’m just taking it because I wanna be bilingual, and I plan to continue to use (+ learn) Spanish after HS/College.
They definitely do but OP doesn’t have 4-5 APs and a couple Honors, but 2 APs, 2DEs in Spanish, and very few Honors, the rest being regularw and a solid B average, weighted; however OP mentioned CStep, is completing Introductory Calculus which sounds like Honors precalculus with Analysis, has completed Physics… so she stands a chance. It’s still a big reach even with CStep.
I’m gonna make this super duper clear cuz I think I…might…have confused you! (Sorry!!)
My school doesn’t have DE, I know what it is, but I didn’t sign up to take it for college credit on behalf of St John’s University (SJU). I wish I could DE but it’s not in my best interest.
Introductory Calculus is NOT for Honors credit ( sobs ;-; ) - I wish it was. I’m currently…enrolled…in Physics (have yet to complete that).
To make it clear through shorter means:
Spanish 2+3 were Honors; 4+5 were College Credit BUT I chose not to take it through SJU. So I get Honors weighting on that. I do NOT do dual enrollment.
AP CSA/CSP are APs and I get extra weighting on them as well.
I’m currently IN Physics, I’m not done.
Introductory Calculus doesn’t equate to Honors Precalc. I wish it did.
I don’t really stand much of a chance for a lot of my schools…realisticness is something my list fully lacks.
Also I take NCCs (non-credit courses) @ NYU year-round so…maybe…that’s something?
Oooh, cool! I read the “International Engineering Program” as IEP-
As a learning disabled student I jumped to thinking this was specific to LD students until I noticed what it is about.
Thanks for this, and I will DEFINITELY check it out. Thank you so much!! You LITERALLY don’t know how much you’ve been of help.
