Senior Year Schedule & Intro (w/updates)

thanks for the explanation, it’s very appreciated!
I will have to then apply to Baruch Honors then.
(Should I do the same for Hunter?)

In general, it’s recommended to apply for all honors programs for which you are eligible. They usually come with desirable benefits. I believe you can always opt out if you don’t like the requirements, which can vary from very few to more extensive. But I don’t know about Hunter specifically.

Thank you again for the tips! :')

You’re welcome!! Good luck!

Yes, seconding for Hunter.
If you don’t like it you can switch out Sophomore or Junior year.

Much appreciated!

by the way, my family makes >100k. so, I definitely don’t qualify for any need-based scholarships or anything, so I cannot apply to HEOP/EOP programs.

CSTEP, however, the eligibility is:

  • New York state resident

AND

  • African-American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan native

OR

  • Economically disadvantaged (Institutions must assure that no more than 20% of all CSTEP students are concurrently enrolled in a state-funded opportunity program)

That “OR” is the only reason I qualify, and I will apply to other CSTEP participating schools (eg: Stony Brook) under the head of the program that I’m in.

[I’m African-American, btw. Not sure if I ever said it.]

Some selective colleges with need based aid offer need based aid to students whose family makes up to 250k.
It could be worth running the NPC on Dickinson, Skidmore, and Mount Holyoke (if you haven’t already). These would be high reaches (due to 3.3 GPA and mid rigor) but can’t be eliminated before you check affordability, especially if you like one of them.
Run the NPC on a few others with EA like Wheaton MA (NOT IL), Muhlenberg, Elizabethtown, Drew, Ithaca, Hobart&William Smith (hope you get/got to meet their rep!), St Lawrence…
Don’t assume you don’t qualify for financial aid.

I didn’t assume that, that’s what my mom said to me.
She said that I’d need to get a lot of scholarships but wouldn’t get need-based aid.

Also my rigor has decreased. My GC took me out of AP CSA, and I sent her an email possibly asking if I could talk to her and the social worker to make a plan…not to drop.
~ English (all 4 years normal)
~ Math (all 4 years normal, doubled up Junior & Senior Year. My school calls CS Math. AP CSP & Algebra 2 [11th] and Introductory Calculus [12th])
~ Science (all 4 years normal. earth science->living environment->chemistry->physics)
~ Social Studies (all 4 years normal, Global I & II, USHG, Gov/Eco)
~ Foreign Language (all Honors/Advanced - Spanish 2H/3H, College Spanish 4/5)
~ Electives (Studio Art 1, Theater Arts I, AP CSP, Marketing & Advertising)

Hopefully I can put something in the place of AP CSA?

general update -
new schedule:
Period 1: senior privilege
Period 2: English 12
Period 3: Resource Room 11-12
Period 4: College Spanish 5
Period 5: free period/lunch/senior privilege (all 3 of these names are in reference to the same thing)
Period 6: Economics (next sem it’ll still be Participation in Government)
Period 7: Physics
Period 8 (A-day): Gym 11-12
Period 8 (B-day): Physics Lab
Period 9: Introductory Calculus

[seniors in my school are supposed to take six classes + gym, I am now exempt…or so it seems.]

My school policy:

Schedule changes will only be considered for sound educational reasons and must have the approval of all involved parties.
• SENIORS must carry a minimum of six classes in addition to Physical Education each semester.
• Students must use the official Add/Drop/Level Change google form when requesting a change.
• The appropriate deadline will be met if the form is dated/received by the Counseling Center by the designated date.

Fortunately, your mom is not necessarily correct in this instance.

All schools have what is called a net price calculator webpage where you can enter financial information and get an estimate of how much need-based financial you would qualify for. The estimates are usually pretty accurate. They do vary (sometimes significantly) from college to college, so be sure to run them at all your top choices! Usually you will get more need-based financial aid from private colleges than from public ones.

Note that if your parents are divorced or own a small business, the calculator will be less accurate.

Just google net price calculator and the name of the college. Don’t use the “my intuition” one — that is too generic . There will be a specific one as well.

I’m so sorry your GC took you out of AP CSA, if I remember well it was a class you really wanted and prioritized. Was it too much work?

Perhaps add a few more SUNYs - New Paltz at the very least.

Forget the 3 selective colleges I suggested then - though 8 would try Muhlenberg, Elizabethown, Susquehanna, Ithaca… I don’t know, perhaps even St Lawrence (not sure it’s reachable).
But DO run the NPC.
Financial aid includes scholarships, grants, loans, and work study.
Everyone, no matter their parents’ wealth, is entitled to a 5.5k federal loan.
After that, there are state grants from NYS for STEM majors or staying instate and studying at a SUNY.
Private colleges can then offer grants and scholarships from their institutional funds. Some may be need-based (the college defines your need, which is why you need to run the NPC on every and each one on your list) and others may be merit-based (the college defines this in relation to other applicants and/or has grids: it can be linked to coming from a region they have few students from, playing an instrument they need for their orchestra, high test scores…)

I mean…it took me three hours to do the homework last night…heh…
I am taking Marketing and Advertising (ugh, as it’s the only option) next semester…have to wait until January.

also @MYOS1634 I had a meeting as I’d mentioned above and we all decided that I should drop out of it anyway,
new schedule! (again!)

Period 1: senior privilege
Period 2: English 12
Period 3: Resource Room 11-12
Period 4: College Spanish 5
Period 5: free period/lunch/senior privilege (all 3 of these names are in reference to the same thing) | spring semester period 5 I’m enrolled in Marketing & Advertising
Period 6: Economics (next sem it’ll still be Participation in Government)
Period 7: Physics
Period 8 (A-day): Gym 11-12
Period 8 (B-day): Physics Lab
Period 9: Introductory Calculus

How are Intro to Calc and Physics going?

I’m wondering whether you should apply as a STEM major (or not) at colleges where you’re admitted to the whole university (vs. A specific college or major).
Like, Susquehanna, Muhlenberg, Ithaca… Is there another major than CS ?

At Marist, Cyber security?

Or ITS

As opposed to CS (which is CSA on steroids)?

All colleges that have CSTEP would be STEM majors obviously but since you’re no longer in CSA perhaps not CS but an alternative??

Physics is alright, Calc I have a 0 average (as when I changed my schedule around my grades all changed to zeroes, so that isn’t my actual average.)
Since I have a little less rigor in my course load I can focus on Physics now (as it’s my hardest class) and yeah.
I don’t want to major in CS anymore- I’m only going for my top 2…but Neuroscience > anything in Engineering right now.
So like-

Top 2 Majors (now) + an extra

  1. Neuroscience (if a school doesn’t offer it, I’ll major in Biochemistry or just Biology)
    I changed.
  2. Global Public Health w/a concentration in something
  3. If a school doesn’t have either, I’m gonna do Biology or Biomedical Sciences.

Also Marketing & Advertising can be taken for honors credit!

(it would be named Marketing & Advertising Honors + could get 1.03x weighting on my GPA!)

An introductory course that examines business activities involved in the process of getting products or services to the customer. Major emphasis is placed on the marketing mix, consumer behavior, marketing research, selling techniques, mechanics of ad creation and visual merchandising, retailing and careers in marketing.
Students will demonstrate their skills by completing a marketing simulation in a computer lab. This course is the prerequisite for Sports Marketing, Fashion Marketing and Video Game Marketing. This course may be taken for honors credit by completing an assigned project. *Marketing and Advertising is required by students obtaining an Advanced Regents sequence in Business.
(in the CD 2024-25 for my school)

what do you mean by that :/?
(sorry I reread this a lot so I may point things out that didn’t seem important to me before now)

Cyber security and Informatics are applied areas of CS aka Computer Science.
CS includes many fields which you must have discovered in AP CS Principles.
BTW which parts of that course did you enjoy most?

Cyber security focuses on CS applications to protect people, organizations, and businesses against pirates and criminals.
ITS (the major actually has various names) combines business and CS applications.
Informatics is how CS can help specific fields, like Bioinformatics.
The CS major is like AP CSA except much, much faster and theoretical.
For Cybersecurity and other applied areas you’d still have to take intro to programming (aka the college equivalent of CSA but twice faster paced) but the upper level classes wouldn’t be as theoretical.

To get a more concrete idea, compare these two majors at NYU: required courses, sample schedules … - thinking of CSTEP in particular
In Tandon, the Applied CS major (here, called Business/Tech)
https://engineering.nyu.edu/academics/programs/business-and-technology-management-bs
In CAS
https://engineering.nyu.edu/academics/programs/computer-science-bs

As a note: nowadays Marketing is most valuable associated with Statistics or Data Science. You took AP stats, right?
So you could see if you could do your Honors Project on something that applies your knowledge from AP stats to something you studied in Marketing. You could talk to the Marketing teacher this week and write a few notes about it in “Additional information” in CommonApp (not sure how this would work with SUNY apps but same idea: show you have stat skills and personal ideas that you can adapt to a subject ).

I didn’t take AP Stats, I dropped out…for reasons I don’t want to disclose.

I wish I was still in it, because out of all my APs, I was most interested in the following: AP Stats, AP Lit, then AP CSA.

I’ve given up on Computer Science and Engineering completely (for a major), I might want to minor in something in or out of that field.

I would freak out for any faster paced class then I already tried to take…

Marketing doesn’t start until sometime in January…
