Senior Year Schedule & Intro (w/updates)

Yes that’s why you have to think of your project now and talk about it with the teacher now, so that the project can be discussed in Additional information (it shows autonomy and creative thinking so it’d be a plus for your app.) Also I’m sure you’ll love doing sth like that.

Is there a way for you to take regular stats?

AP classes are college courses twice slower. So each semester is like taking 5 AP classes that go twice faster than an AP class BUT it is strongly recommended freshmen only take 4 courses their first semester to adjust to the pace (+ a Methods seminar worth 1 credit. Students sneer at it because it’s easy, and fail to see that that’s the very point of it, ie., the only class in your entire university career where if you just do what the instructor asks and turn it in on time, you get an A - and that A may well cushion a bad surprise grade-wise in another class.)
Some universities have more intense, 4-credit classes (instead of the more typical 3-credit class) so you only take 4 a semester. In that case I’m not sure if you can take 3 classes + something worth 1 credit.
It sounds scary but students who are mentally ready to hit the ground running, go to office hours right away with questions about the reading/lecture/problem sets, book tutors ahead of time so the tutor can review papers, attend review sessions… Do well. Students who do none of these things… Rarely do as well. Sometimes it takes these students 2 months to realize it’s not HS anymore (well.. that college isn’t " HS with no parents"..) sometimes all of Fall semester.

Smaller colleges like Susquehanna, Muhlenberg, etc, tend to be more supportive/nurturing.
However you’d need to check that they have proper accomodations.

I wish I could take regular stats. I can’t, I’m too “advanced” for it – I already asked my GC the day I dropped out of AP Stats, and that’s what she told me.

…why wouldn’t they? Aren’t all schools required to provide accommodations?

This is freaking me out, like a lot, and I’m trying to get over it.
Edit: Hobart & WS will be visiting my school tomorrow!

Can you insist? Say it’ll help you with your Marketing project and possible college major.
(.. not strictly true since Statistics as a major is calculus based but Elementary statistics even in college is Algebra-based so having a preview couldn’t be a bad thing since Elementary statistics is what non STEM majors take.)
Since you’re “advanced”, you may have already covered what the regular class covered or have very little to catch up upon, or should be able to catch up with what you’ve missed. :crossed_fingers:
Perhaps first go see the teachers who offer Regular stats in the periods you don’t have a scheduled class to see if they’d be amenable - if they are, it’d be a good point to convince your GC.

The regular class is literally just projects – no homework, no tests, no quizzes – just projects. That is too boring for me.
Plus I’m way past the Add/Drop deadline and I think my GC is tired of changing my schedule…we’ve changed it 5 times!
For example, they were doing Fantasy Football (Stats Version) the first couple weeks of class. I have friends in that class that don’t like math. I like math, and I don’t want to devote my time to a filler class that could ruin my schedule again.

Course Description of Applied Stats:

The Applied Statistics course is an option for any student who has successfully completed Algebra 2. At least one statistics course is typically required for college majors such as engineering, psychology, sociology, health science, and business. This course can be a good preparation for those areas of study. Applied Statistics provides students with an introduction to important topics in statistics by focusing on the statistical thinking behind data collection and analysis. The course is project-based and is designed to build students’ skills and offer real-world activities, such as interpreting surveys, election polls, and medical studies, and defining a research question and using representative data to find an answer. Topics include sampling, surveys, experimental design, organizing data, distributions, probability, and inference.

Fantasy football really IS stats.
But if there’s no way, it is what it is🤷
Btw Moneyball, a film about sports and stats:

The class sounds like a perfect match for Marketing actually. It’s like a broader introduction to college statistics (some colleges would offer a class like this, and some would have more specific topics, like one semester about elections, one semester about sports or money…)

Sorry if I sounded dismissive :frowning: I feel like I did…

It’s structured differently from your usual math classes so I get it.
But it’d still be valuable.

I might try and take a stats class outside of school, perchance at NYU (as it’s an offering in the program and I know the teacher.)

Could you just audit the elementary stats (the project based one) at your school?
No need to change your schedule, you just attend the class instead of one of your free periods. You list it on your CommonApp course list as Applied Statistics (audit). It might be easier to arrange (practically - transportation:0; materials: in school) than the NYU CStep course and less risky?

what does audit mean in this case?
and the class is only offered period 8, and I have Physics.
By the way, my NYU program has nothing to do with CSTEP.
(If colleges find this, oh well, but I’m in NYU STEP, not CSTEP)
Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) [the NYU STEP that I’m in, serves as a precursor to CSTEP in a way.]

Sorry for the confusion(STEP v. CSTEP) at NYU.

Physics is more important.

To audit means to attend a class but you don’t have a grade so don’t have to take tests. It’s for learning the content without pressure.

It’s fine, you’re not the first!

Agreed!

If I’d known this previously I’d ask to audit a class last year., dang.

As an update, my Calc teacher put my grades back in - I have a 90 average, got a 90 on my Limits & Relative Max/Min test and Physics I have a 73 (but I have a tutor – do not fear) and got an 85 on my last quest!

hey as a update I’m sending in my apps to three schools today:
sorry for the minor update!

  • SUNY Binghamton
  • SUNY Stony Brook University
  • SUNY University @ Buffalo
@MYOS1634 thank you for your guidance, it will follow me throughout the rest of the college process!
@DramaMama2021 here is one of your many updates to come!
@MMRose thanks for the financial aid tips!
@blossom thank you for the tips on not taking the Northeastern AI course!
@thumper1 thank you for your kindness and advice
everyone else in this thread, @livsgoing2college thanks you IMMENSELY !

thank you!!

Hi all!
I’ve sent my SAT scores to all 3 of the SUNYs (Bing, SBU, and University @ Buffalo) -
Bing let me self-report, but if I enroll I need to provide them with actual test agency documentation, while UB and SBU I had to use the College Board’s Send Scores as they want actual ‘proof’ of my scores.
I’ve officially removed Marist, replaced it with a super reach (Cornell).
Current List:

Binghamton
Stony Brook
Univ @ Buffalo
Northeastern (being sent in this week)
NC State
Baruch (being sent in this week)
Clemson (being sent in this week)
GWU
Hunter (being sent in this week)
Cornell
NYU
RIT
Wellesley

For my two CUNY schools, I am applying under Free CUNY week! (but regular decisioning them anyway)
I’m submitting Clemson RD & Northeastern ED2 tomorrow.

Currently drowning in Cornell’s 9 questions/supplements and non-supplements…

My desired majors went BACK to Engineering.

  1. Chemical Engineering (or if a school has Biomolecular Engineering, then that)
  2. Biomolecular Sciences / Molecular Biology (written in both of those 2 ways)
  3. Neural Science/Neurobiology/Neuroscience (written all 3 ways)
  4. Global Public Health (+ unknown concentration)

As you can see, I am quite the later found interest in science/STEM girl.
Please–if you have questions…or well-wishes–do not hesitate to share!

I would add Marist back and apply EA.
Better safe than sorry.
Also, add another SUNY like New Paltz, Plattsburgh, Albany…

OP- there is no difference between a reach and a “super reach”. A reach is a reach.

Give it your best- but if you are drowning keeping up with school work AND all these applications, there is no shame in dropping a “super reach”- especially if the essays won’t allow you to recycle what you’ve already done.

I’m worried- you seem to have a penchant for overloading yourself and then having to drop back/dial it back. Why not figure out a manageable workload from the git-go and then just stick with the plan? Don’t sabotage yourself with an overly ambitious program-- whether it’s courses that are too demanding/too much stress, or too many schools, or EC’s that are unnecessary.

Good luck. I don’t want to harsh your buzz- but the goal is to have a few colleges you can afford and you’re excited about to choose from in April, not to wipe yourself out in the process.

Yeah, but do I really want to go to a school that admits tons of people from my school? (this is supposed to sound rhetoric)
People in my district call it the “13th grade”, plus I don’t want to do their LSP, because the description I’ve gotten makes me think it’s an extension of special education, and I don’t know how I feel about being in a “special education” college program, I’d rather apply for my academic accommodations.
[ More on that program: https://www.marist.edu/documents/d/guest/oaa-differenceshighschool-college / Learning Support Program - Marist College ]
It just…I want to get out of that, you know? I don’t want to no longer self-ID as LD/ND but I feel that program sounds like special education…in college.

I literally dropped out of all my AP classes (I will forever be glad and mad at the same time, but the only AP I have to show to colleges is the “easiest” one; AP CSP), my GC reiterates my coursework is still rigorous (taking Physics instead of APES/AP Bio/or no sciences as a senior, taking Introductory Calculus rather than Applied Stats/AP Stats/or no math at all, College Spanish 5: by taking 5 years of Spanish from Spanish 1->Spanish 5.), etc.

I’ve heard of people using the term “super reach”. To be honest, an ivy for me is immediately a “super reach”…

Can I ask what you mean by penchant? I looked up the word and it sounds like something my therapist would tell me… :')

The vast majority of my list is affordable (as my parents agree with me as I type this right now), but maybe not affordable in the way of my grades.

My current grades after dropping out of 3 AP courses:

College Spanish 5: 85.72 (UW); 88.2916 (W) (grade is not done for the quarter; we have a mini-proyecto due tomorrow night and that will definitely help my average)
Economics: 82.53 (grade is not done for the quarter)
English 12: 100 (grade is not done for the quarter)
Introductory Calculus: 89.51 (I think this is the only final grade which I would hope…I’d be so happy to have a 90+ in my only math class, especially because my teacher has a rule for seniors getting a 90+ are exempt from the Final Exam!)
Physics: 72.67 (but it may go up – on Part 1 of my quarter exam I got a 94 plus 3 bonus points so a 97, so I hope to do well on tomorrow’s part!)
Unofficial Quarter GPA: 86.086 (UW); 86.60032 (W)!

But yeah, thanks for the concern. I’m taking it (lightly) - in response to @blossom.
