Hi there! I’m a senior in High School (will be official on September 3rd, 2024!) and I wanted to make an introduction by mentioning my upcoming senior year schedule! (I received it today!!)
For some really quick background, I’m classified as learning disabled under IDEA, I have a speech and language impairment. I have an aspiring career goal in either Computer Science/Math (Data Science?)/Engineering or something STEM-related.
My GPA is a 3.3/4.0 UW, I have no idea what it is weighted, and my most recent SAT score was a 1150 (but I took it in August). When I superscore it, I have an 1180. Also I live in NYS (New York State) so any “R” indicates a Regents class. Any (A) or (B) next to a number represents the revolving days.
Here it is!:
(1) AP English Literature 12 - I’m kinda scared because I’ve never taken a challenging English class and the summer reading assignment is so hard.
(2) Introductory Calculus - I know the teacher and she’s really nice! I’m so excited to take precalculus!
(3A) Gym - no comment. Just a requirement to graduate.
(3B) Physics Lab - also no comment.
(4) Physics R - I’m scared because I took an introductory Physics over the summer and it was hard. But I know the teacher, he’s the school’s Robotics coach (aka my fav EC!).
(5) AP Computer Science A - I just took Principles last year, got a 3, and want to continue the sequence, so here I am.
(6 - Fall) Economics - NYS graduation requirements. I know my teacher, I had him for US History last year and I’m very stoked to have him again.
(6 - Spring) Participation in Government - another NYS graduation requirement.
(7) AP Statistics - recommended by the same teacher I have for Statistics. I had her for Algebra 2 last year, can’t wait for this class.
(8) College Spanish 5 - same teacher as last year, it’s my fourth year of HS Spanish.
(9) Resource Room - my case manager mandated it last year.
*BTW I originally had no AP CSA 5th and instead had Stats there, and a 7th period Lunch, but then reached out to my counselor to fix it, so now my only ‘free’ is ninth…my guidance counselor was worried I don’t have a break cuz 9th period is apparently not a break?
Please feel free to ask me about anything!
Hope everyone’s school year starts off well or you have/had a great summer break!

Looks like a good schedule! Have fun with it!
Will you be applying to colleges this year?
Best wishes!

Thank you!! (I will.)
Yes I will, thanks for asking!
My list is kinda sad right now, but I’m hoping my August SAT score whenever it comes out can increase some of my chances!
I don’t really wanna go test-op unless it’s really necessary…
Don’t worry about your SAT score. Even if it doesn’t go up, there are plenty of schools where you can get a solid education in STEM where they would be glad to take a student with your current scores.

Do you have a lunch period?
You should definitely have one
Have you taken precalculus? Because introductory calculus likely follows regular precalculus, unless it’s precalculus and calc rolled into one.
It looks like a hard schedule with Physics, calculus AND AP stats plus advanced Spanish, AP CSA and AP Lit. Would you consider taking Honors English 12 for instance?

So…funny story.
I reached out to my GC earlier today because that’s when my schedule was released and if you want to change your schedule you send a request via. a Google form.
My original schedule was AP Lit, Calc, Gym/Lab, Physics, AP Stats, Economics/Gov’t, Lunch, College Spanish 5, and Resource Room.
I filled out the Google form and AP CSA took the place of AP Stats but I still have it now, just two periods later & with my desired teacher.
But yeaaaa…I’m hoping one of my teachers lets me eat or senior year will be VERY demanding.
And in my school, I think introductory calc is literally our way of calling it “Precalc”, this is their course description:
Introductory Calculus is designed to reinforce and develop beyond the curriculum presented in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Topics studied include: the review of functions, theory of equations, trigonometry, polar coordinates, conic sections, matrix operations and applications, limits, continuity, derivatives, anti-derivates, and applications of derivatives and antiderivatives. Many of these topics are typical of those that a student might study in an introductory college mathematics course. This course is an essential prerequisite for college calculus. Graphing calculators are required for this course.
[I haven’t taken precalculus or calculus yet, this is an introduction for me]
Plus now I’m taking 3 maths (cuz apparently CS is a Math in my school???)
@MYOS1634 we don’t have Honors English 12 so I’m stuck in AP unless I drop. Low-key hoping I don’t have to…
Yes, it sounds like “Introductory calculus” is a mix of precalculus and calculus, it’s well thought out actually so that you’re ready for college calculus.
AP Lit it is then, and since you already did the Summer Reading …
You NEED a lunch period though. Taking a small break and eating aren’t optional but necessary to function.
If I were you I’d keep EITHER AP Stats or AP CSA. Neither is required for college nor for a STEM major; if you want to major in CS or informatics then I’d keep CSA. AP Stats is easier and you like the teacher so that alone would make it a good choice.
Which do you prefer?

Honestly I have no idea which one I want - I know my Economics teacher would definitely let me eat in his class, so I might be keeping both.
I’m currently playing ‘catch-up’ anyway…
Are you getting extra time on the SAT?

Welcome, @livsgoing2college! Hope you have a fabulous senior year!
Taking a break is not just a time to relax, but it helps you to focus and understand material better when you get back into work/class. If you just have constant work/class then your brain will feel fried well before the end of the day, and you won’t get as much out of your classes. Make sure that the guidance counselor gets you a break during the day.

Yeah, I applied for extra time on the SAT since the beginning of sophomore year.

Hi, thanks for the senior year well-wishes!
My only break is my last class because I really only do work (eg: homework) in Resource Room. There’s nothing assigned to me (very rarely will I have to do goal-oriented work) and I don’t know if I even want a break…

Can you explain what a typical A day and a typical B day would look like?
(Like
A
8:10: calc
9:30: Spanish V
10:50: …
B
8:10: AP CSA
9:30: AP Lit
… )
Even a 30mn break in the middle would really matter.

yeah!
So like, every other day our schedule changes - typically not much.
To put my schedule in its respective A/B pattern, I’ll write it out. Each class is 42 minutes in duration/running time, with the exception of Period 1, with the extra 5 minutes for announcements. We have 5 minutes in between classes, as well.
I have bolded the classes that change.
A:
7:40 - 8:27: AP Lit
8:32 - 9:14: Introductory Calculus
9:19 - 10:01: Gym
10:06 - 10:48: Physics
10:53 - 11:35: AP CSA
11:40 - 12:22: Economics
12:27 - 1:09: AP Stats
1:14 - 1:56: College Spanish 5
2:01 - 2:43: Resource Room
B:
7:40 - 8:27: AP Lit
8:32 - 9:14: Introductory Calculus
9:19 - 10:01: Physics Lab Period
10:06 - 10:48: Physics
10:53 - 11:35: AP CSA
11:40 - 12:22: Economics
12:27 - 1:09: AP Stats
1:14 - 1:56: College Spanish 5
2:01 - 2:43: Resource Room
[In the spring, however, Economics changes to Participation in Government.]
Some if my kids didn’t have lunch in high school, and no study halls. This was the case for many in choirs, band or orchestra since those classes were a set period. They could usually eat in choir, and sometimes Spanish for some reason. The school switched to a block schedule where everyone got an hour lunch at the same time (also used that time for weekly labs).

Thanks for writing out your schedule for us. Looking at this, you need a break, and resource room doesn’t count.
Thanks for writing this all out.
It looks like either AP CSA or AP Stats should be removed so you have a free period for lunch,hw, college apps, etc.
No problem! I have to look into it (removing It I mean) so…yeah…
