Seniors having to go to school AFTER graduation

How many of you are in districts (or know of districts) where seniors have to go to school (and some have to take finals, if they don’t have an A in the class) AFTER graduation?

In our district, graduation is tomorrow or Saturday (3 high schools in the district), but the last day of school isn’t until May 28th – two full weeks later!! It’s easier for seniors to exempt finals than it is for grades 9-11, but some seniors do have to take finals (May 26 and 27).

This seems TOTALLY ridiculous to me. Graduation is supposed to mean that high school is OVER, not that it’s going to be over in 2 weeks. Makes the ceremony a LOT less meaningful. No sense of joyous release at it all being OVER. I really feel for these kids – there’s a lot of pointless BS in the schools here, but this really takes the cake. (the kids get kind of resigned to the BS, but I know that two weeks of school after graduation sure would have p***ed me off when I was a kid.)

Very weird!!!

Oh, that’s a shame. I’m sad for those kids.

Does graduation come early because multiple schools take turns sharing the commencement venue? i.e., some years you’re scheduled before exams, some years after. Or is it just a BS policy?

In my district, seniors, unless they still need to take tests, do not return to school after graduation. However, it can cost school districts money because for funding purposes those students are considered “absent”, so that may be why some districts have seniors return to class after graduation.

I have never heard of having graduation before classes are over. Our graduation is not until June 20 and the last day of finals for seniors is June 11. I can’t imagine how difficult that would be for the students and the teachers. I am having trouble keeping my kid motivated to keep working when his IB exams are over; he still has 4 weeks of school left and will still have to take his school finals, which I think is ridiculous.

I find is it strange that seniors are coming back for exams after graduation. In NYC public schools there is a no-walk policy, which means unless all testing is done, all classes are passed and you will be receiving a diploma on the last day of school, you cannot participate in graduation.

The venue is a large downtown convention center/sports arena, which apparently needs to be scheduled years in advance for this time of year. But, STILL, the district could look to the future and spare upcoming graduating classes this ridiculousness by planning ahead and booking a date that would come AFTER the end of the school year. School usually finishes up right before Memorial Day (like this year) – I don’t think it’s ever,EVER gotten out as early as May 14. So apparently this situation has existed for quite some time. Pathetic. Find another venue, or arrange ASAP to book this one two or three weeks later.

Here, all finals are prior to graduation, but our graduation is really late (June 26th). My last full day of classes is the 14th, and since I don’t have any regents this year, I won’t have to come in until graduation rehearsal, which is the day before graduation (and the day after prom).

I have to say, I’m jealous that your school districts get out in May! =)

Our school is in Aug-May as well–finishing usually the week after Memorial Day–so Memorial Day is a study day for exams all week…for grades 9-11.
Srs usually finish exams about 2 weeks prior–and must have all work done, and all graduation requirements done, no fees due, all uniforms in (sports etc)…

or no sheepskin…

That does seem kind of strange. Most teachers hopefully won’t care if seniors don’t go to school after graduation. (My principal joked that NO senior are allowed on campus the last day of school, which is the day after graduation.)

After finals, no teachers really care if you attend their class anymore. Still, our finals are like 3-4 days before graduation. Our school year is Sept-June, with the 25th being the last day. (It was suppose to be the 17th but a whole wk of no school due to a storm = added days.)

I’m never ceased to be amazed at the stupidity of some of those in the Educ. field, particularly those in position of responsibility. Of course, if its a private school, you get what you pay for. :)
