How is the sense of community of campus? Social Life? I feel that the city might dilute the social aspect of a college campus. Any comments would be great.

You’re right about the urban campus diluting some of the ‘community,’ but I don’t think it’s by much. As far as describing the overall sense of community, I would say GW is about mediocre. However, I think the sense of community is very strong on smaller scales.

For example, we had issues with school spirit and student attendance at sporting events when I was there (2007-2011). You’d find some students sporting GW-wear on any day, but you would never know it was a “game day” like you would at large state schools. I think a lot of it comes down to how busy GW students are. We traditionally are involved in a lot of student groups, intern at some pretty crazy places, study hard, and party hard. I guess some could argue that it doesn’t leave a lot of leftover time for “school spirit.”

As far as smaller groups like frats, schools, dorms, majors, student orgs, etc, I found that there was a strong sense of community. These groups would study together, party together, go out on the town together- you name it. I found that this was more than adequate to quench my need for community.

So, if you’re worried about university-wide community, you can always try to improve it (assuming it is still like it was 3+ years ago). The thing with school spirit is that it’s contagious- if enough students sported GW colors, if the Colonial Army did a better job recruiting, and if there were more GW-wide events, things could definitely change. And these things could easily change over the course of the year if enough students took it upon themselves to do it.

Hope this paints a picture for ya!

EDIT: I should add- it sounds like a campus visit during the school year would be a great idea for you. I can tell you about my observations all day but you might see something else when you show-up.

I won’t have time to visit as I’m applying very soon but if I get in I defiantly will. Thanks btw.
