Sentence Completion Help!

Although the news he reported was ----, the anchorman remained calm, keeping his fear from his expression.

(A) confusing
(B) unexpected
(C) anxious
(D) exciting
(E) dreadful

I find this question really ambiguous. And by the way, this is from the Kaplan 12 Practice Tests (Page 821, Q2).

I would say B. unexpected.

The news was unexpected (breaking news), he remained calm and did not express fear in his expression.

Although is used, so the word in the blank space should have a meaning opposite of calm. Again, the word must imply fear too.

So, in my opinion the most suitable word is ’ dreadful’. Answer choice E

I chose E but it could go either way in my opinion. You probably wouldn’t see a question like it on the real SAT

I also choose E

It’s E. “Dreadful” means “causing fear.” The anchor felt fear, an emotion that isn’t part of the definition of “exciting.” Remember, that “best fit” stuff is just not true. The answer is always a perfect fit when you look up the actual definition.

I agree with E.

ahhh i see the error of my ways now. should have read E before i said anything >.<

Thanks for all the replies! The answer is E (dreadful).

Hmm, I personally think it should be B though. I mean, why would a reporter feel scared to report “dreadful” news–it’s his job. Shouldn’t he be more afraid of reporting “unexpected” news? Because then he might do it wrong, and eventually lose his job, his wife, his apartment…DEATH :P

haha i agree! But i guess, it does sound more appropriate, more people associate fear with dread rather than unexpected.

It’s not that he’s scared to report the news; the news itself scared him. It’s dreadful news. It causes fear upon hearing it.

E for sure. Dread causes fear

Well, personally Kaplan was the BEST test tips and stuff, but their questions are ridiculous. Some doesn’t even make sense and I see lots of error in their books. Like one time their math was calculated wrong and I researched seeing if I was the CRAZY one but nope it was their mistake. And also their answer choices like the letter are misplaced, like it would be A. B. C. D. D. <----- uhmmm Kaplan people there are two D’s!!! Haha I knw it’s not a big deal but you get my point Kaplan tests are horribly I wouldn’t rely on it too much.

Also I think the correct answer is E. Because it mentioned “fear” I’m also heading toward B. unexpected, but idk

Yeah, Kaplan have tons of mistakes and the answer key is messed up. But I’m almost finished with the book, and I don’t want to start using up the official tests just yet. What do you guys think about the 11 Princeton tests? Are there any more books I don’t know about?
